The Q Conflict #6 covers and preview

Out this week is the sixth and final issue in IDW's series-spanning crossover The Q Conflict, IDW's big multi-series crossover event. In IDW's long history of exotic crossovers, just bringing together the various Star Trek crews has managed to be one of the strangest so far; and this finale only takes that further, with among other things, armies of Mugatu, living chess topiary, and a horse! All that comes from writers Scott and David Tipton, with David Messina and Elisabetta D’Amico on art duties.

The covers for this issue come from the usual gang for the series: David Messina (and colourist Alessandra Alexakis) provide both the A and B covers, forming a diptych featuring the series captain's and the the gaggle of omnipotent beings that cause them strife in this story. Meanwhile George Caltsoudas final retail incentive cover for the series also features the captains, and their ships.

The Q Conflict #5 covers and preview

Out this week is the fifth issue of The Q Conflict, IDW's big multi-series crossover event, which as ever is brought to use by writers Scott and David Tipton, with David Messina returning after an issue off to pencil, with inks by Elisabetta D’Amico.

The cliffhanger ending involving the Prophets from the previous issue is wrapped up with surprising ease, leaving the multi-series crews able to deal with Borg for this issue's troublesome task. Thankfully Borg joining the adventure mean a nice selection of Borgy covers for this issue. Once more David Messina (and colourist Alessandra Alexakis) brings us both the A and B covers, forming a diptych featuring all the series ships facing a Borg cube. George Caltsoudas's latest retail incentive cover is a real highlight though, featuring an almost liquid Borg Queen, with other villineous aliens lurking in her shadow.

Comics updates: New covers and art for Year Five, Q Conflict, and more

Lots of Star Trek comics updates and previews today, including some really nice new artwork. Continue below for all the latest from Year Five, The Q Conflict, DiscoveryWaypoint, and the Transformers crossover:

First up, Year Five cover artist J.J. Lendl has revealed his retail incentive covers for the first two issues in that new TOS series. Issue one is a retro one-sheet, and issue two a really cool travel poster for the probably inadvisable trip to the Tholian Assembly!

Star Trek vs Transformers #5 preview

Out this week is the fifth and final issue in IDW's Star Trek vs Transformers comic series; if you thought Fortress Tiberius (the USS Enterprise Transformer) was wild, just wait to see what this issue delivers!

The series is from writers John Barber and Mike Johnson, with art by Philip Murphy, who also provides the action packed space battle A cover. The B cover, also rather spacey, is from Josh Burcham, and there's also a more down to Earth (or Qo'noS?) retail incentive cover from Chris Panda.

Continue below to check out all of those, and a five page preview from the book:

Star Trek toys prototypes and production assets at auction

There's some pretty cool Star Trek stuff on offer in Prop Store's latest auction, of toys and memorabilia. Among the reams of Star Wars stuff you'll find a healthy selection of Star Trek toys, spanning a good chunk of Star Trek toy history, including some pretty unique items, such as unreleased action figures, prototypes, and production art. Continue below to check out what's on offer:

My favourites among the listings are a series of molds for The Final Frontier figurines produced by Galoob. These were made by roto-molding, which Prop Store have an excellent description of in their auction catalogue:
Rotational molding or “roto-molding” uses liquid vinyl material to create items such as baby doll heads or squeeze toys. The molds are composed of one piece with an opening. A set amount of vinyl is poured into the opening, which is then capped and rotated in many directions while heated until the material forms an even, detailed coat on the inside of the mold. While still warm, the part is pulled from the mold and allowed to cool. Roto-molding is a very economical manufacturing method because the mold is cheap to produce and simple to use.

The molds themselves are made by submerging a wax pattern in a bath and electroplating onto it until the desired mold thickness is reached. The wax is then melted out of the mold, leaving the “clean” form inside. The inside of the mold is where the detailing lies; therefore, the exterior may only provide a marginal representation of the final toy.
All five character's in Galoob's Final Frontier range are available, Klaa, Sybok, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, although most of the molds are missing parts, with just Klag and McCoy complete (I wonder if you could make your own figures from them?)

Murphy also provides the energetic USS Enterprise A cover, while Priscilla Tramontano takes us inside the bridge for a unique view of Optimus Prime for the B cover. There is also a retail incentive cover from George Caltsoudas featuring M'Ress and Bumblebee.

The previous Waypoint Special was only just released, but it's great to see another volume rushing up to bring us even more creative and diverse Star Trek stories. Star Trek vs Transformers #3 preview

This week brings us the third issue of IDW's Star Trek vs Transformers crossover comic series, and the crossover potential is really paying of this time, with a particularly killer final page! As ever the book is penned by Mike Johnson and John Barber, with art from Philip Murphy.

Three different covers are available again, with Philip Murphy once more providing the A cover, this time featuring a whole gaggle of characters. The B cover by Gavin Fullerton has several Starfleet characters, but just one Transformer towering over them, but the best of the bunch is surely Megan Levens' (coloured by Charlie Kirchoff) featuring the female characters from the series, with a particularly majestic looking M'Ress.

January Star Trek comics

IDW have released their January solicitations, which include three new Star Trek books, and an omnibus. They pre-announced most of this month's big event releases a week or so ago, but did save one nugget of news for the solicitations; the Transformers crossover has been extended an extra issue! Continue below for all the details of the month's releases:

Star Trek vs. Transformers #5
Written by John Barber and Mike Johnson, with art by Philip Murphy
The stunning conclusion! As the Klingon-Decepticon alliance prepares to wipe out their enemies once and for all, Kirk and the Autobots make one last desperate bid to merge Cybertronian technology with Starfleet ingenuity. It’s a final conflict you won’t want to miss!
As IDW proudly proclaim, "Demand was so high, we’re doing another issue!". This surprise extra issue in the crossover will be offered in at least three covers, with apparently only the battle-worn retail incentive cover by Chris Panda so far revealed. The A cover will be by Philip Murphy, and the B by Josh Burcham.

Star Trek vs Transformers #1 preview

Out this week is the first issue in IDW's latest crossover comics series, Star Trek vs Transformers: Prime's Directive. The four-part series brings together the original animated series eras of both universes, with artist Philip Murphy and colourist Priscilla Tramontano taking us right back to the retro look of both series. The comic's writing duties are a crossover in themselves, bringing together Star Trek's Mike Johnson with Transformers' John Barber.

This first book is offered in four different covers, with Philip Murphy providing both the A and B covers, which form a diptych, featuring the Starfleet and Autobot characters on the A side, and the Klingons and Decepticons on the B side. There are also two retail incentive covers, with Paulina Ganucheau giving us a feline crossover, and Derek Charm riffing on the classic TAS promo art with a Transformers twist.

Star Trek vs. Transformers #2
Written by John Barber and Mike Johnson, with art by Philip Murphy.

The no-holds-barred Saturday morning mash-up continues!
Philip Murphy is also the A cover artist, and has released his cover, featuring Kirk transporting into or away from battling bots, via Twitter. IDW's September Star Trek comics, including a Transformers crossover

IDW have released their solicitations for September, which include two new Star Trek comics. One of those is something I'm frankly surprised has taken this long to happen, a crossover with one of IDW's biggest other licenses, Transformers! (They sort of indirectly crossover in the Infestation crossover a few years ago, but the two universes didn't actually interact in that instance). The most exciting thing about the crossover is that it's specifically with Star Trek: The Animated Series, so we can look forward to a particularly stylised series, featuring M'Ress and Arex! Continue below for all the details:

Star Trek vs. Transformers #1 (of 4)
Written by John Barber and  Mike Johnson, with art by Philip Murphy
The Transformers ‘80s cartoon series meets Star Trek: The Animated Series in a no-holds-barred Saturday Morning mash-up for the ages!

At the edge of Klingon space, the Starship Enterprise finds there's more to the final frontier than meets the eye, when Kirk and his crew come face to face with the strangest life forms of all: Cybertronians! This unprecedented crossover brings together two of the greatest science fiction universes of all time—in the style of their classic animated series! A five-year mission meets a four-million-year war!
If the aquashuttle doesn't turn out to have been a Transformer all along I'm going to be pretty disappointed!

The book will be available in at least four covers, and they've all been released already! The A and B covers are both by Philip Murphy, and featuring a connecting image, with the A cover featuring the Enterprise crew and their Transformer friends, and the B cover featuring the Klingons (one of them a cyborg!) and the Decepticons.

Star Trek comics round-up: Green Lantern crossover continues, Captain Data, Gold Key, covers, and more

Lots of Star Trek comics news below, including the return of Captain Data, preview art and covers from several series, and IDW updates from the San Diego Comic Con.

First up, a new crossover series! Last year's really rather good Kelvin timeline/Green Lantern crossover series, The Spectrum War, ended quite surprisingly with the Green Lantern characters apparently having settled in the Star Trek universe. A sequel series due to start later this year promises to pick up where the previous tale left off:
Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will once again cross paths with the Green Lantern Corps in a sequel to last year’s Star Trek/Green Lantern series. The creative team of Mike Johnson and Angel Hernandez will reteam for another epic space opera, this one picking up the new status quo where it left off and introducing additional cosmic heroes and villains familiar to fans of both series.

Eaglemoss launches Star Trek comics collection

Eaglemoss, publishers of Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, are moving into another area of the Star Trek universe with the launch of Star Trek: The Graphic Novel Collection. The fortnightly series will deliver a hardcover editions of comics drawn from the entire fifty year history of Star Trek comic publishing. The books will feature spine-art building up a single image, plus new introductory texts:
With this collection you can revisit all the classic characters and incredible art from the STAR TREK comic archives. Every edition has a specially-commissioned introduction to provide context to the story. Every book contains a number of collected comics and a bonus reprint of one of the comic archive’s classic stories.
I expect that description, from their website, indicates this Star Trek collection will follow a similar format to Eaglemoss' DC collection, in which each issue includes a big multi-issue story, plus an extra issue drawn from somewhere else in the comic series. That would certainly be a pretty good way to delivery the many single issue Star Trek comics, while also giving each book a big story to focus on.

IDW's March titles, and other Star Trek comics updates

IDW have released their solicitations for March, which include five Star Trek titles, including the start of a new story, and the long awaited UK comic strips book. Continue below for full details of those, and other Star Trek comics news.

Star Trek (nuTrek ongoing) #55: Legacy of Spock, part 1
Written by Mike Johnson, with art by Tony Shasteen.
This all-new story set in the universe of the new STAR TREK films celebrates the life of the most iconic character of them all: Leonard Nimoy's SPOCK. In Part 1 of this 4-part epic, the elder Spock joins the last survivors of Vulcan to search the galaxy for a new homeworld! Don't miss this special series, part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the STAR TREK franchise!
Writer Mike Johnson recently outlined the series while talking on J.K.'s Happy Hour podcast, giving a bit more detail on what it's all about:
...it actually starts with that scene in the 2009 movie, where Nimoy Spock meets Quinto Spock. And in this comic we follow Nimoy Spock away from that meeting, and follow him as he joins with the survivors of Vulcan and they develop plans to find a new homeworld, and consequences and tribulations ensue from there. And then over the course of these four issues we will see Spock reflecting on the life - It's really looking back over the whole of his life. We'll see cameos and flashback with familiar characters from the original universe/timeline. It's like a celebration of his life, at the same time we're telling a very important story in the Trek present about finding a safe location for the new homeworld.
And speaking of J.K. Woodward, he will provide the subscription cover for this first issue in the series, alongside the regular cover from Tony Shasteen:
