Latest nuTrek behind the scenes and production artwork

While we continue to wait for news of Star Trek Into Darkness' equivalent of the Star Trek: The Art of the Film book (which could still be on the cards; last time around the book was announced in August, after the May release of the film, in time for a pre-Christmas November publication), here's a new behind-the-scenes video, showing the work of visual effects artist Anselm von Seherr-Thoss in Into Darkness:

John Eaves also recently wrote an article for StarTrek.com, sharing some of his artwork from Into Darkness, including designs for the Nibiru and their weapons, and a "dark phaser". Here are a couple of examples, you can see and read more, on StarTrek.com:

UPDATE: Another artist that worked on the film, Maurico Ruiz, has also posted some examples of his work, including designs for Scotty's fishy friend, and other wildlife, plus many options for more exotic looks for Kirk's twin companions. Here are a few examples, see more on Ruiz's portfolio:

Elsewhere in the nuTrek universe, Concept Art World have run a couple of features on concept art from Star Trek: The Video Game, featuring work from artists Mike Sebalj and  Thomas Pringle. Here (continuing after the jump) are some of my favourites from those selections, while you'll see much more if you click through to the respective articles:

New Star Trek: The Video Game trailer and concept art

Star Trek: The Video Game is out today in North America (and coming in the following days elsewhere), to celebrate Namco Bandai have released a new, action-packed, trailer. Looks like the Enterprise is doing her best to up her pain freehold for Into Darkness with all the damage she's taking here!

io9 have also run an interview with Paramount's Brian Miller, who produced the game. The interview covers much of what we've heard in the promotion leading up to the release of the game, but the article is peppered with concept art, including lots of new pieces. Here are some pretty pictures of New Vulcan:

And here are a couple of Gorn types:

Lots more concept art after the jump:

See the nuTrek cast recording their parts in Star Trek: The Video Game

Yahoo have released the third in the Making the Game series films looking behind the scenes of Star Trek: The Video Game. This episode focuses on all things sound, with mention of  Michael Giacchino's new music for the game, the film accurate sound effects, and most pleasing to watch of all, the cast reprising all their roles. Take a look:

What I really want to know, is will their be a soundtrack from the game released? This new Star Trek music can't be stuck only behind the whine of phasers and the growling of Gorn surely?

To see more of the making of the game, check out the previous videos, here, and here.

Latest nuTrek aliens

Toyark have posted images of the Star Trek Kre-O range, including a new image of the series one Kreon figure collection. There is a little glitch, in that the whip thing the Gorn is holding is in fact it's tail... For a close look at the entire range, check out my previous report.

The Gorn are also highlighted in StarTrek.com's latest report on Star Trek: The Video Game; their last guide to the Gorn castes to be featured in the game. This time we meet the warrior:

The Warrior is the next evolution step above the Gorn Initiate, but still closely resembles a wild animal/beast when in combat. Equipped with basic armor, the genetically enhanced Warrior is intelligent enough to operate weaponry such as the Pillager and the Arc Driver.
And finally, TrekMovie have updated their latest gallery of Star Trek Into Darkness images with this behind-the-scenes shot of Keenser (Deep Roy) and JJ Abrams:

Lots of game-play footage from Star Trek: The Video Game

TrekCore have posted four videos of game-play footage from Star Trek: The Video Game, giving us a great idea of the different things we'll have to get up to in the course of the game, and lots of samples of the voice acting, music, and cut-scenes. As someone who isn't much of a gamer, these clips have made me far more excited about this game than anything we've seen previously; there are lots characters moments and story here, which appeal to me purely as a trekkie looking for more Star Trek stories.

Several of these scenes are ones that have been previewed to some extent already, but there is lots of new footage too; plus seeing them in longer form obviously tells us a lot more. Which also means lots of spoilers!

In this first one Spock find a route through a blocked passageway, only to come face-to-face with a big Gorn. Excellent TOS/classic sci-fi serial inspired music follows as Kirk and Spock fight it off:

In this one Kirk and Spock fight more Gorn, then find themselves in aerial combat before crashing back down to earth. Then Spock has to help Kirk to a medical bay and repair his broken leg; one of the not-fighty little tasks in the game:

This next clip is several different scenes, all featuring ships. It's starts with Kirk bickering with Scotty while trying to call in an air-strike from the Enterprise (which is pretty spectacular). We then see the space battle mode with the Enterprise fighting off Gorn ships. Then there's a space dive while the Enterprise is trapped in some sort of energy field (almost looks like a Tholian web, but coming from Gorn ships), some great Kirk/Spock moments in this bit. Then we have a shuttle crashing on a Gorn planet, prompting a brilliant McCoy scene, before Kirk and Spock go base jumping into a canyon (their space suits apparently using forcefields to create a wingsuit):

Finally we have Kirk and Spock chasing a Gorn through the seemingly endless corridors of the Enterprise. Plus a nasty little robot thing jabbing a redshirt:

In other Star Trek: The Video Game news, Star Trek.com have posted the latest Gorn cast introduction. This time we meet the "guardian":

The Gorn Guardian is considered the "royal guard" of the Gorn and is essentially a melee-based attack type that carries a large energy axe, dealing medium damage with a swiping attack. The Guardian is equivalent to the Warrior in health, but also has the ability to generate a shield from his energy axe. Guardians are more evolved than the Initiate and Warrior, spending more time standing upright on their hind legs. Although they tend to slouch down while moving, Guardian attacks are made from an upright stance.
For a closer look at the new Gorn, check out this scary close-up, posted on the game's twitter. Which alas confirms they've not got compound eyes (or this one doesn't at least):

New Vulcan: Reborn

Overhead view of New Vulcan from the browser game.
IGN have set up a promo browser game/competition to promote the forthcoming release of Star Trek: The Video Game. New Vulcan: Reborn sees you help direct the construction of the New Vulcan colony, the primary location of the new game. Here's how these describe this web-game:
Star Trek: New Vulcan Reborn is a puzzle game that sees you assume the role of a key member of the Vulcan Principal Research Council. You have been charged with helping to co-ordinate the colonisation of a new planet for the surviving members of the Vulcan race. Your keen intellect is required for the myriad tasks involved in such a huge undertaking. It will be up to you to brief military personnel, direct automated mining teams and advise civilian settlers to help establish the foundations of New Vulcan.
There will be twenty-four missions, one released each day, with three already up. The game play is very simple; you have to select a target for whatever task you've been assigned, and are rewarded with a little animation of people doing that thing once you've made your selection.

You also get points for choosing the right place on the map of New Vulcan, and for doing it quickly, with a leader board leading to you potentially winning prizes, including copies of Star Trek: The Video Game, Playstation 3s Xbox 360s, a 3D TV, and copies of the first nuTrek film on DVD or bluray. You'll need to be in United Kingdom, Sweden, Canada (excluding Quebec), USA (excluding the States of New York and Florida), Germany, or Norway, to win stuff though.

To give you an idea of what you'll be tasked with, here are the mission briefings for the first three tasks. Note, it might not be best to follow my locations for all of these, I didn't get high scores in every mission!:

The Vulcan High Council ship arrives.
New Beginnings

Welcome to New Vulcan.

It is a boon to have someone of your calibre on board as we begin to colonize a new home-world for the Vulcan people.

Initial steps have been taken to prepare the planet for habitation and your arrival signals that this undertaking can now being in earnest.

Today, members of the Vulcan High Council will arrive to offer guidance during the colonisation efforts. Deploy a military detachment to the spaceport's eastern landing pad to ensure their safe transfer.

Clue: Score a touchdown at landing pad three.
The survey team deploys.
Waterworks

A consultation session with representatives from the Vulcan High Council and our chief engineering officer has just concluded.

The council welcomed your foresight in proposing the construction of a combined high-volume water treatment facility and recycling plant to meet the needs of the developing city.

The rocky outcropping overlooking the water to the south of the city is the logical site for this construction. Plot the location and we will send a survey team to commence planning.

Clue: There's a perfect spot overlooking the water.
The drilling platform in action.
Mine How You Go

Sub-surface scans of the planet's crust have revealed energy spikes in the south-west quadrant.

We should prepare an exploratory mining platform to further analyse the source of the readings.

Choose a location due east of the of the outlying power station that we have already established in the region. The drilling platform should be constructed nearby, but so close that it risks disturbing the power station's energy matrix.

Clue: It's a stone's throw to the right of the power station.
Future missions promise to feature a meteoroid threat to the planet, the discovery of pergium reserves and ancient ruins, and wild razor-boars threatening the city. So sign-up and have a go, and help to build New Vulcan so the Gorn have got something to destroy when you get to playing Star Trek: The Video Game!

The game also has two and a half minutes of new music, have a listen:

Brilliant Shatner vs Gorn trailer for Star Trek video game

This has to be best Star Trek promo video ever, William Shatner reenacts his classic battle with the Gorn, complete with all the original Kirk moves, while playing the new Star Trek video game:

UPDATE: Switched to version posted on the Namco Bandai Youtube channel, available in up to 720p.

Following the destruction of the Vulcan homeworld, Vulcan scientists are hard at work establishing a colony on New Vulcan. With the help of an experimental piece of technology known as the Helios Device, the scientists hope to terraform the planet, creating a home for the few remaining Vulcans. But when activated, the Helios Device creates a rip in the fabric of space time, leading to an attack by an unknown alien race emerging from the anomaly. It’s up to Captain Kirk, First Officer Spock and the crew of the Enterprise to confront this new threat, preventing the Helios Device from falling into enemy hands. The future of the Vulcan people and the entire Federation is at stake.

The Guide is out on the 23rd of April, the release date of the game. Meanwhile the Star Trek game twitter account posted this new image of Gorn ships attacking a planet:

Meet New Vulcan's new Vulcans

The StarTrek.com has posted some new images and information about two Vulcan characters in the new Star Trek video game. It seems Spock's connections with these particular Vulcans will be a story point in the game. The young (looking) female Vulcan, which Kirk naturally finds attractive, is T'Mar, the captain of a space station which the Enterprise visits in the opening of the game when the Enterprise is called in to help save the day.

T'Mir then joins Kirk and Spock on their mission to New Vulcan. T'Mir also happens to be a childhood friend of Spock, and her father, Surok, his mentor, who they just happen to find on New Vulcan. He and T'Mir were leading efforts to establish the new Vulcan homeworld. He ends up being one of the only survivors of the Gorn attack.

These two Vulcan's are apparently major charactors alongside our more familiar Enterprise crew, as StarTrek.com describe:
T’Mar and Surok assume major roles in helping Kirk and Spock learn more about the Gorn’s attacks not just on New Vulcan, but across the galaxy. They also reveal that the Gorn have absconded with a powerful and mysterious machine known as the Helios Device, the functions of which could prove disastrous in the hands of an enemy as ruthless as the Gorn.
On the subject of New Vulcan, IDW artist Michael Stribling (who previously did covers for the Khan: Ruling in Hell series, and one issue of Burden of Knowledge) has been posting some fantasy cover art for could-be Trek comics - Including a tale he has made up featuring the two Spocks and a childhood sweetheart of Spock's on New Vulcan (young T'Mir maybe!). Here's his artwork and story idea (as posted in his DeviantArt gallery):
Elder Spock has visited an ancient Vulcan colony on another world, hoping to establish this as New Vulcan (which was at one time a resort of sorts he and his family visited when he was a teenager...where he met a young Vulcan girl he fell in love with, but never saw again- the Vulcan Idic symbol pendant he is clutching in the image was a parting gift from the girl). Upon arriving at the planet , he makes a horrible discovery...and so, calls for the help of the only other person he can fully trust (and who also understands the emotional gravity of the situation). That person is HIMSELF....Spock, the younger.
Stribling also posted his take on a cover for the first issue of a comic book adaptation of Star Trek Into Darkness. I think it's pretty good, so perhaps when IDW do the inevitable adaptation they could just buy what Stribling has already prepared!:

Meeting more of the Gorn

StarTrek.com has posted a new article introducing more of the Gorn castes from the new Star Trek video game. They are:

The Henchman
The Henchman is one of the main antagonists in the game. He is 1st seen on New Vulcan and is the Gorn who steals the Helios device. Second in command of this particular Gorn Armada, the Henchman controls squadrons of initiates and warriors and take orders directly from the Commander. The Henchman’s weapon of choice is the Pillager, but his real danger is his ability to cloak.

The Champion
An 8-foot mutated Gorn, this variation was designed as an homage to The Original Series’ one-on-one battle between Kirk and the Gorn. He will make his appearance in a boss battle that will take place in the Gorn Trials level. The Champion is bigger and burlier than the average Gorn due to his rare birth defects.

Scouts
Scouts are the long-range specialists, their sniper rifles doing massive damage when a round connects with its target. Scouts do not take cover, but have two unique abilities key to their success as the silent killers of the Gorn army: Scouts can walk on walls and have the ability to camouflage so they blend in with their background.

Brutes
The Brute is one of the fiercest, most dangerous Gorn in close quarters. Big and heavily armored, Brutes aren't evolved enough to use weapons, resorting to their natural weapons of claws and charging attacks to devastate their enemies. Brutes charge through cover, destroying it and sending anyone behind that cover flying backward. The Brute has a large amount of hit points and is most heavily armored in the front. A Brute by himself is tough. Two Brutes are a challenge. Brutes in combination with other enemies represent climatic battles that will be among the most difficult in the game.

Rusher
The Gorn Rusher is the least evolved of the “intelligent” Gorn. They don't use weapons and move on all fours, making them very fast and agile. Rushers charge directly at enemies, leaping into the air and dragging them to the ground to bite and claw them to death. Gorn Rushers are weak and can't withstand much damage before being killed.

Meanwhile TrekCore have posted an excellent review of the game, as they experienced it at a recent preview event. They also released this preview video showing the Gorn in action:

Latest Star Trek video game images (updated)

Namco Bandai have released a bunch of new images from the new Star Trek video game. Including a look at the Gorn, new Vulcan, what appears to be another new uniform in the nuTrek crew's wardrobes, and an idea of the massive scale of the (presumably) Gorn starships.

UPDATE: Stevivor have posted many more images from this set, including more game-[lay images (as opposed to what I assume are cut scenes), a close up of a female character, a shuttle under attack, the tricorder mode, and lots of corridors! I've added them below:
