Latest nuTrek behind the scenes and production artwork

While we continue to wait for news of Star Trek Into Darkness' equivalent of the Star Trek: The Art of the Film book (which could still be on the cards; last time around the book was announced in August, after the May release of the film, in time for a pre-Christmas November publication), here's a new behind-the-scenes video, showing the work of visual effects artist Anselm von Seherr-Thoss in Into Darkness:

John Eaves also recently wrote an article for StarTrek.com, sharing some of his artwork from Into Darkness, including designs for the Nibiru and their weapons, and a "dark phaser". Here are a couple of examples, you can see and read more, on StarTrek.com:

UPDATE: Another artist that worked on the film, Maurico Ruiz, has also posted some examples of his work, including designs for Scotty's fishy friend, and other wildlife, plus many options for more exotic looks for Kirk's twin companions. Here are a few examples, see more on Ruiz's portfolio:

Elsewhere in the nuTrek universe, Concept Art World have run a couple of features on concept art from Star Trek: The Video Game, featuring work from artists Mike Sebalj and  Thomas Pringle. Here (continuing after the jump) are some of my favourites from those selections, while you'll see much more if you click through to the respective articles:

New Star Trek game trailer, screenshots and concept art!

The nice people at Paramount Interactive and Digital Extreme have released a new trailer for next year's inbetwequel Star Trek video game:

They've also put out a load of new screencaps, and some concept art. Here are a few of my favourites, including a closer look at the new Gorn, and the strange multi-directional gravity environment of part of the game. (Even more images are after the jump.):

New trailer for Star Trek: The Video Game

IGN have released a new trailer, plus new screen caps and concept art, for next year's inbetwequel Star Trek video game. Have a watch:

IGN also interviewed Sheldon Carter from Digital Extremes about the game, who commented on the core cooperative nature of the game:
If you take it back to day one when we started talking about making a game, and you break down what Star Trek is, it really is the story of Kirk and Spock, which is halves of the same whole.
Carter was also keen to stress that they are trying to make the game reflect the film aesthetically, and build upon the universe of Star Trek by not just having it all be about shooting people.

More information about voices in the game, and additional platform announcements are expected as we move closer to the release next year.

New movie game pushed back to release next to film

Namco Bandai has been announced as the publishing partner for the new Star Trek video game, which has, as one expected, been pushed back from release this year, to early 2013, to tie-in with the release of the new movie. The game might also have a title of sorts, as StarTrek.com seem to be referring to it as Star Trek: The Video Game. You can read the full Namco Bandai press release on the 8of5 Archive.

Star Trek game screencap

Digital Extremes have released a new screenshot from the forthcoming new-movieverse game, which apparently still on track for release next year:

Nice to see they're using the same design of phaser rifle that was recently introduced in the Star Trek ongoing comic.

UPDATE: Giant Bomb has posted several more images, including this cool concept art for a creature encounter in what is labelled the "contagion cavern":

The other images are screenshots, one of which is apparently a Vulcan colony:

Roberto Orci on the new Star Trek game

Gamepro has posted an interview with Roberto Orci about the forthcoming Star Trek computer game. One of the points emphasised was that the game will be an integral part of the new movie universe, a stepping stone between the two films which will have some degree of payoff if you engage in the entire saga:

One of the things I’m proud of most in the first movie is that one of the ways to look at it is that it’s about Kirk and Spock and when you saw the original show they already knew each other. One of the things we wanted to show was how they met. We felt that our solutions could have worked for the original series. Some people criticized us for the fact that Spock was logical and Kirk was immature, but our response was that you’re meeting them before the original series. In our movie you get to see them grow.

That’s what our movie was about and that’s what the sequel is going to be about. What’s great about the game is that it gets to show that middle step. You get to see Kirk and Spock in a way you’re not going to in the movie. They’re becoming friends; they’re going on adventures you’re not going to see in the movies. The game is giving you new insight into who they are. If you don’t see the movie that’s ok, you’ll still understand, but if you’re true fan of Trek and you play the game you’ll get that amazing middle step.

Orci also talked about how the new creative team are considering this game and other tie-in works, like the comics, to be quasi-canonical:

True fans will tell you that canon is only what’s filmed. I’m not an authority on what is canon. However, I will tell you that this may be the first game that falls within the parameters of the people who are in charge of canon for now; the “supreme court,” as we call ourselves because we are the ones in charge of Star Trek for now. We won’t be in charge forever, but for right now we’re deciding what canon is, so I can tell you this is the first time where the game itself is generated by the people who are deciding canon and we generated the game to fit within canon.

I always loved that Star Trek had a very rich and continuous canon, that’s one of the reasons why Alex and I and Damon and J. J. even though it’s not our responsibility, and we don’t care what we get paid for it, we want to help make the games, the comics; we want consistency. We do it because we love Star Trek.

The interview also discusses expectations for the next film and Orci's interests and approach to working with Star Trek, make your way to Gamepro to find out more.
