Star Trek Beyond complete soundtrack available now

Varèse Sarabande have released Star Trek Beyond: The Deluxe Edition, Michael Giacchino complete soundtrack for the movie. This release now comes as a bit of a surprise, as it comes much closer the the film than the extended soundtracks for the previous Kelvin timeline movies, which were released a year or more after the films.

A limited edition of 5000, the new expanded release features 47 tracks over two discs, including some beautiful new themes (especially those for Yorktown and Jaylah). I cannot wait for my copy to arrive! Continue below to check out the covers and track listing.

Complete Nemesis soundtrack, and other music news

Varèse Sarabande have announced they will be releasing the final soundtrack (from the prime-timeline films at least) in the complete Star Trek movie soundtrack project. Coming early in January will be Star Trek Nemesis: The Deluxe Edition. I'm particularly excited about this one, as Nemesis has some of my favourite themes in all of Star Trek music, plus this new edition includes Brent Spiner performing Blue Skies!

This will be a limited edition of five-thousand. Here's Varèse Sarabande's summary of what's in this release:
Goldsmith’s complete score from Star Trek Nemesis is presented, along with a set of bonus tracks that includes source music, a set of alternate cues and mixes, plus a rare opportunity to listen in to the final moments of Jerry Goldsmith on the Star Trek scoring stage with his orchestra and director Stuart Baird.

So the only movie left without a complete soundtrack now is Into Darkness, which is also in the hands of Varèse Sarabande. I hope it comes soon! In the mean time there is a little Into Darkness music news I've yet to report. A little while ago (back in September in fact!), John Tenuto let me know that after a little delay from the CD and digital release in May, the promised vinyl release of the Into Darkness soundtrack has indeed become a reality. As far as I can tell this is the first Star Trek film soundtrack release on vinyl since The Final Frontier, all the way back in 1989!

In other Star Trek music news, Star Trek Soundtracks list three forthcoming releases from La La Land Records. They suggest still to come this year (although maybe that has slipped by now), will be a follow up the 2011 TNG soundtrack collection, in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Volume 2. While in 2014 they are anticipating soundtrack collections for the music of Voyager and Enterprise as well.

Listen to 22 minutes from the Into Darkness soundtrack

Star Trek Into Darkness is now out in some parts of the world, but there's still a week to go before any of us can enjoy the soundtrack. If you're craving the music, you're in luck though, as Michael Giacchino recently appeared on WQXR's Movies on the Radio show, to talk about his work on Into Darkness, and also played twenty-two minutes of music from the film, including the tracks: "Logos/Pranking The Natives", "London Calling", "The Kronos Wartet" (with Klingon choir!), "Ship To Ship", and the "Star Trek Main Theme".

In addition to those tracks from the album, a piece called "Odo to Harrison" was played; the same haunting beautiful track we heard performed a while ago at a Star Trek concert. It sounds so much richer with the proper recording of it. If this isn't part of the album release, I really hope the full soundtrack comes along soon, because this track is stunning! Have a listen:

In addition to all the commentary on the music from Giacchino in the above radio program he was also recently interviewed by Film Music Magazine. Ha made a nice comparison to Star Wars, in the way he has gone about using some of the themes established in the first film:
The ultimate examples are in John Williams’ scores for “Star Wars” and “Superman.” Hearing those themes again was like seeing your old friends, which always made sense to me, Themes need to accompany the appropriate moments as you continue telling different stories with the same characters. Both J. J. and I felt right from the get go that we were going to bring back those particular themes, mainly the “Enterprise” and “Kirk” ones. But we also wanted to use them in different ways, and expand on them this time. So it was fun to play around with them as well.
He also talked a bit about the theme for the USS Vengeance:
We’ve always called this one “The Black Ship.” There’s a theme associated with that as well. But it wasn’t so much about size of it as it was the craft’s intent. Why is it even in existence? That’s the question our characters are trying to answer along with trying to figure out who the heck Harrison is. There’s a lot of questions throughout the story which the characters are constantly trying to catch up to. The first movie’s Narada was just about “Oh shit, this is a massive ship and I can’t deal with it!” This one’s more about, “Yeah, it’s a big ship, but it’s more about what is it trying to do?” This film is about the undercurrent of what was happening, as opposed to what you are seeing happening.
Read the full interview on Film Music Magazine. And if you missed them before, check out my previous reports for covers and a full track listing for the Into Darkness album, and samples from each track.

Star Trek Into Darkness soundtrack cover and track-list

Varese Sarabande Records have updated their listing for Michael Giacchino's Star Trek Into Darkness soundtrack with the front and back covers, including the track listing. Here are the covers, which use the domestic poster for the front, and the variant of the international poster background for the back:

Here's the track listing, from which we can probably infer some details of the order of events we have seen in the various trailers and clips, and maybe some details of things we haven't see - So don't read too closely if you're really into voiding spoilers. Tracks marked with a * denotes the inclusion of the TOS theme:
  1. Logos/Pranking The Natives (3:01)
  2. Spock Drops, Kirk Jumps (1:43)
  3. Sub Prime Directive* (2:23)
  4. London Calling (2:09)
  5. Meld-merized (2:40)
  6. The Kronos Wartet (5:25)
  7. Brigadoom (3:41)
  8. Ship To Ship (2:50)
  9. Earthbound And Down (2:37)
  10. Warp Core Values (2:56)
  11. Buying The Space Farm (3:17)
  12. The San Fran Hustle (5:00)
  13. Kirk Enterprises* (3:00)
  14. Star Trek Main Theme* (3:25)
The soundtrack will be released on CD and LP the 14th of May from Varese Sarabande. In Germany it will come from Colosseum, while in Japan Rambling Records will release it, both on the 15th.

If you missed it, John Harrison's theme (not sure which track that might be), was performed at a concert a few weeks ago, check out a recording of it after the jump. It's a pleasingly mysterious and brooding piece:

Into Darkness updates: puzzle, soundtrack, and trailer

A few Star Trek Into Darkness newslets:

Neca have officially announced their Connect With Pieces puzzle/game, which is based on the first Into Darkness poster. Here is the updated box art they have released:

And their description of the game:
Star Trek Connect with Pieces is the all-new puzzle building game. Each puzzle piece has one of 5 symbols on it (they are cleverly pressed in so that they are only visible when looking for them).

Score points by finding the right pieces! Match up more symbols for more points! Featuring 2 modes of play, you can ramp up the speed or the strategy for different play styles.

Featuring a proprietary manufacturing method. The primary image is maintained while the game play is layered in for a unique take on this classic activity.
Michael Giacchino's soundtrack, which was already available to pre-order on CD, is now listed on Amazon for a vinyl release as well. As far as I can tell the last Star Trek film soundtrack release on vinyl was The Final Frontier, all the way back in 1989!

Still no other details on the album yet, other than that in Germany the CD will be released by Varese Sarabande's German licensee, Colosseum.

Finally, if you like to watch every variation of the trailers possible, Paramount have released a new UK TV version. Apparently their Youtube release is localised, but TrekMovie have uploaded a copy, so you can watch it wherever you are:

Into Darkness novelization and soundtrack update

Simon and Schuster have updated their listing for Alan Dean Foster's novelization of Star Trek Into Darkness. Unlike the original release of his novelization for the first film, which used promo-portraits of the cast within the text of the title to create a new cover design, this time they've gone for a straight re-use of the first poster (why not? It's a great poster):

The blurb for the book is also pretty much a straight re-use of one of the general film descriptions:
The official movie tie-in novelization of the highly anticipated sequel to 2009’s blockbuster feature film Star Trek!

Pioneering director J.J. Abrams has delivered an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Star Trek Into Darkness, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, and Peter Weller, arrives on May 17th, 2013.

The novelization is out in trade paperback, ebook, and audiobook on the 21st of May. No news yet on who's reading the audiobook, but last time it was Zachary Quinto. It will also be released, translated into German, by Cross Cult, in both paperback and ebook, and from Laser Books translated into Czech.

In other Into Darkness news Varese Sarabande Records have added a listing on their site for the soundtrack, by Michael Giacchino. We can look forward to hearing that from the 14th of May, but at the moment there are no other details.
