The Q Conflict #2

It's Captain vs. Captain vs. Captain vs. Captain in the most high-stakes scavenger hunt the galaxy has ever seen as Picard, Kirk, Janeway, Sisko and their teams compete for the amusement of their godlike tormentors. The biggest Star Trek crossover event ever continues here!

This second issue in the Q mega-crossover is offered in at least three covers, A and B by David Messina, plus a retail incentive from George Caltsoudas. We can only see the A so far though.

IDW's December Star Trek comics, 2019 hints, and Transformers crossover preview

IDW  have announced their solicitations for December, which include two new Star Trek comics (both the final issues of their respective series). Continue below for full details of those, hints at a new series for 2019, previews from the Transformers crossover, news of the latest omnibus releases, and more!

So first up, coming in December:

Star Trek vs. Transformers #4
Written by John Barber and Mike Johnson, with art by Philip Murphy.

With the Enterprise disabled by the Klingon-Decepticon alliance, things look dire for Spock, Optimus Prime, and the landing team. But with the Autobots’ help, can Captain Kirk come up with a solution to save the day from a massive Cybertronian threat?

This book will be offered in three covers. The A cover by Philip Murphy has yet be released, but we can check out the rest. The B cover is by Priscilla Tramontano, featuring Optimus Prime filling the viewscreen on the Enterprise. There will also be a retail incentive cover by George Caltsoudas, featuring M'Ress (who is getting a good showing on covers for this series), and, I think, Bumblebee.

New Visions #22: An Unexpected Yesterday preview

Out this week is the final issue of  John Byrne's New Visions photocomic! Issue 22 is titled An Unexpected Yesterday, and bring back one of Byrne's most visited characters, Gery Seven, in a time travel double whammy that also features the Guardian of Forever!

Unusually for New Visions, the book will be available two covers. The standard edition brings together the various highlights of the story, including Carolyn Palamas, who returns for this adventure, and the mysterious probably-not-Devidians-but-do-look-sort-of-similarish aliens of the week! The second cover will be a convention exclusive, and is a simple still of Captain Kirk.

IDW's September Star Trek comics, including a Transformers crossover

IDW have released their solicitations for September, which include two new Star Trek comics. One of those is something I'm frankly surprised has taken this long to happen, a crossover with one of IDW's biggest other licenses, Transformers! (They sort of indirectly crossover in the Infestation crossover a few years ago, but the two universes didn't actually interact in that instance). The most exciting thing about the crossover is that it's specifically with Star Trek: The Animated Series, so we can look forward to a particularly stylised series, featuring M'Ress and Arex! Star Trek vs. Transformers #1 (of 4)

The Transformers ‘80s cartoon series meets Star Trek: The Animated Series in a no-holds-barred Saturday Morning mash-up for the ages!

At the edge of Klingon space, the Starship Enterprise finds there's more to the final frontier than meets the eye, when Kirk and his crew come face to face with the strangest life forms of all: Cybertronians! This unprecedented crossover brings together two of the greatest science fiction universes of all time—in the style of their classic animated series! A five-year mission meets a four-million-year war!

If the aquashuttle doesn't turn out to have been a Transformer all along I'm going to be pretty disappointed!

The book will be available in at least four covers, and they've all been released already! The A and B covers are both by Philip Murphy, and featuring a connecting image, with the A cover featuring the Enterprise crew and their Transformer friends, and the B cover featuring the Klingons (one of them a cyborg!) and the Decepticons.

Star Trek comic covers round-up

IDW have released a whole load of covers for forthcoming Star Trek comics, continue below to check them all out, plus a few other comic updates.

First up we have the main covers for Succession #2, the second issue of the mirror universe Discovery miniseries, which should be due out later this month. The A cover here should be by issue artist Angel Hernandez, and the B cover is a photo.

IDW have announced their July solicitations, which include two new Star Trek titles. Continue below for all the details:

Succession #4

In the Mirror Universe, the heroic characters you thought you knew care only for power and glory. In this, the final issue of Succession, see Michael Burnham in the fight of her life!

This book will be available in four different covers. The A cover by Angel Hernandez, and B photo-cover, you can see below. The two variant covers by Nick Roche, and Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire, have not yet been revealed.

New Visions #21: The Enemy of My Enemy preview

Out this week is issue 21 of  John Byrne's New Visions photocomic. The headline story of the book features an entertaining team-up of Kirk with Kor, in The Enemy of My Enemy. Like many books in the series, there is also a second story, and this time it takes up a good two-fifths of the book in a delightfully quirky Pike-era story with a H.G. Wells crossover, The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.

IDW's June Star Trek comics

IDW have released their solicitations for June, which include two new Star Trek comics, continue below for all the details, and other comics updates.

Succession #3
Written by Mike Johnson and Kirsten Beyer, wit art by Angel Hernandez.

Now it can be revealed! This miniseries, centered on the Mirror Universe of Star Trek: Discovery, delves deeper into the characters you only thought you knew…

The book will be available in four different covers, with the A cover by issue artist Angel Hernandez, and the B cover a photo-cover featuring Michael Burnham. There will also by two retail incentive covers, one by Yoshi Yoshitani, again featuring Burnam, and the other the latest in the series of ships cover by Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire. The two Burnham covers are the only ones so far released:

New Visions #20: Isolation preview

Out now is Isolation, the twentieth issue of IDW's and John Byrne's New Visions photocomic. The story sees the main bridge crew each lost alone on the Enterprise, in a situation which allowed Bryne some interesting visuals, and a few cameos (which the photo-comic format neatly permits), including the one hinted at on the cover.

The book, like many New Visions issues, also features a short back-up story, Like a Shadow... ...Like a Dream.

IDW announces second Discovery comic series, Succession, and other comic updates

IDW have released their solicitations for April, which include two new Star Trek comics, plus an omnibus book. Continue below for all the details, on those, and other Star Trek comic updates.

The big news is start of IDW's second Discovery miniseries:

Succession #1
Written by Mike Johnson and Kirsten Beyer, with art by Angel Hernandez.

In this, the second Discovery miniseries from IDW Publishing, your favorite characters from the hit CBS All Access series dive into an adventure tied directly into the second half of the first season! 

If the blurb wasn't hinting clearly enough, editor Sarah Gaydos has confirmed this is a mirror universe story.

This first issue will come in at least four covers, with the A cover by issue artist Angel Hernandez, and a photo B cover. George Caltsoudas will also be providing a variant cover, and Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire will be continuing their ships of the line cover series from the first Discovery miniseries into this series too. But, none of these covers have yet been revealed!

New Visions: The Hunger preview

Our this week was issue nineteen of IDW's and John Byrne's New Visions photocomic. The Hunger takes us on a bit of a roller coaster ride of a story, with the crew tackling an interplanetary threat in grand fashion. And it all starts with the Enterprise taking a typically TOS casual extravagant new mission, in this case "an exploratory mission into intergalactic space". You can check out the start of said mission in the preview pages below - Watch out for the cool breathing masks!

Boldly Go #17: I.D.I.C., Part 5

It’s the penultimate chapter of “I.D.I.C.,” the blockbuster Star Trek comics event! Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations has introduced us to myriad versions of the beloved Enterprise crew... but the villain behind it all now threatens to wipe out all realities!

The book will be available in four different covers, with issue artist Marcus To providing the distinctive multiple reality portraits A cover. The B cover is yet to be revealed, but will be by Fico Ossio. Then there are also two retail incentive covers, one by Yoshi Yoshitani, featuring Uhura, and a photo-cover, an explosive still from Star Trek Beyond.

Boldly Go #16 - IDIC, part 4
Written by Mike Johnson, with art by Angel Hernandez.

"I.D.I.C." Part 4 of 6! The epic voyage through the Star Trek multiverse continues, as the villain behind it all is revealed... and their vendetta against Captain Kirk threatens to end all realities!

This book will be offered in at least four covers, with the regular one, featuring a myriad Spocks, from Angel Hernandez. The B cover is by Mike Martin, and is part of a series inspired by Funko Pop! vinyl figures, which will run across multiple IDW titles this month. There's a variant cover by Yoshi Yoshitani (not yet revealed). Plus a retail incentive photo-cover.

New Visions: What Pain it is to Drown preview

Out this week is What Pain it is to Drown, the eighteenth issue of New Visions, John Byrne's TOS photo-comic series. The issues sees the Enterprise suffering from a sever case of rising damp! Unusually for New Visions, this book is available in two covers; the regular one featuring the submerged Enterprise, and a convention exclusive cover featuring the shadow of Byrne himself on the bridge. IDW's November Star Trek comics

IDW have released their November solicitations, which include no less than four Star Trek titles; including two new comics, and two omnibuses. Continue below for all the details.

Boldly Go #2 will, as ever, be written by Mike Johnson, with art by Tony Shasteen. Here's the blurb, which reveals a lot of the set-up for the post-Beyond pre-Enterprise-A adventures of the crew:

The blockbuster series continues with an all-new STAR TREK adventure set after the events of STAR TREK BEYOND! Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S Endeavour encounter a new threat to the Federation, but one very familiar to STAR TREK fans! Meanwhile, Spock and Uhura face an uncertain future on New Vulcan!

The book will be offered in four different covers. The main cover featuring a pretty exciting image of Sulu about to quantum leap... is by George Caltsoudas. Tony Shasteen provides the subscription cover, which continues a series that will through the first six issues of the series, with each cover focused on a different member of the Enterprise crew. Two further covers have yet to be revealed, but one will be a photo cover, and the cover will feature art by Marc Laming. Note the covers feature a pretty sharp new title treatment for the series. Boldly going indeed!

New Visions: The Cage preview

Out this week is a special issue in John Byrne's New Visions photo-comic series, an adaption of the Star Trek pilot episode, The Cage.

If you've been following the New Visions series, this is quite an interesting issue to look at in regards to how Byrne constructs the page. Of course when he is tells us new stories Byrne has to construct the images from the stills to create the new story he wants to tell. But here you can directly contrast the differences between the shots on screen, and how Byrne has reconfigured them to work as a comic.

New Visions Gorn and Swarm issues

Fans of John Byrne's New Visions series of photo-comics will be pleased to learn that September will be bring two new issues! One of them comes via unconventional channels though. Continue below for all the details.

IDW have once more teamed up with Humble Bundle, to offer a large selection of Star Trek comics in a bundle, with revenues split between the publisher and charities. In this case Traveling Stories and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, plus a third charity of your choosing if you so desire. Currently digital copies of twenty-eight different titles are available (with the promise of more to be added), representing a diverse range of IDW's titles. All you have to do is decide how much you want to pay, with as little as $15 granting access to the entire collection (which would cost hundreds at normal prices). If you want to pay more, you can, and thus more will go to IDW and the charities.

This time there's a very enticing bonus though. If you donate $25 or more you will also be able to claim an exclusive brand new issue in the New Visions series, More of the Serpent Than the Dove, which features the Gorn. As StarTrek.com describe:

...a brand new story that picks up where the fan favorite TOS episode “Arena” left off. Master photostory artist/writer John Byrne presents the comic-book return of the Gorn, as the Federation’s first attempts at a Gorn peace treaty take a dire turn. 

The book, which unlike the rest of the bundle will will be delivered as a printed volume, will also reprint the first issue of Byrne's Leonard McCoy: Frontier Doctor.

You might notice the emphasised "SERIES FINALE" in that blurb. I've been bugging IDW about what exactly that means, but they're keeping quiet for now; what they will say is, fear not, they aren't going away from Star Trek, and, that there is big news on the way. Whatever that means... Of course with the release of Star Trek Beyond imminent, and the trailers implying the destruction of the Enterprise, there is an obvious break point coming in the nuTrek continuity. Maybe IDW will pick up the story after with something completely new (who knows how world altering the events of Beyond will be), maybe they'll return to ongoing with issue 61 being a new jumping on point. I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

Meanwhile, this issue will be available in three covers, the main one by Tony Shasteen, a subscription cover by Josh Adams, and plus a third cover by Drew Moss, which is part of IDW's celebration of ROM the Space Knight, which will see covers across multiple titles this month (you can see how this last cover was created in an article on 13th Dimension).

New Visions: Of Woman Born preview

This week saw the release of the eleventh issue in John Byrne New Visions photo-comic series, Of Woman Born. The story stars Carolyn Palamas in an immediate sequel to Who Mourns for Adonais? IDW's June Star Trek comics, and other updates

IDW have announced their June solicitations, which include four Star Trek titles, but only one entirely new comic. The rest of the releases are nuTrek omnibus books, which will arrive just in time to get you in the mood for the release of Star Trek Beyond the following month. That one new comic in June is Legacy of Spock, part four, which is issue fifty-eight in the nuTrek ongoing series. This final issues in the Spock story-line is from the series' regular creative team of writer Mike Johnson and artist Tony Shasteen. Here's how IDW describe it:

The stunning conclusion of "Legacy of Spock"! The fate of the Vulcan people hangs in the balance as Spock tries to prevent all-out war with the Romulan Empire! Will the Vulcans find a new homeworld on which to rebuild their civilization... or does this spell the end of their species?
