New Discovery novel explores Pike's Enterprise, plus new TOS covers

It's a big novel news day! Online listings have revealed a new Discovery book on the schedule, and new covers and blurbs for forthcoming TOS books. Continue below for all the latest.

So first up, we have a brand new addition to this year's publication schedule, only the fifth so far confirmed for 2019, and incidentally also the fifth Discovery novel so far. Coming in July will be John Jackson Miller's The Enterprise War - So far this is only listed on Simon and Schuster's online catalogue, but I'm sure pre-orders will be up soon enough. UPDATE: Now available for pre-order.

This appears to be a prequel to season two, explaining, as has been alluded to in cast and crew interviews, what the Enterprise was up to during, and away from, the Klingon war

UPDATE: And the author describes it is just that: "telling where the ship was and what it was doing during the Klingon War"
A shattered ship, a divided crew—trapped in the infernal nightmare of conflict!

Hearing of the outbreak of hostilities between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire, Captain Christopher Pike attempts to bring the U.S.S. Enterprise home to join in the fight. But in the hellish nebula known as the Pergamum, the stalwart commander instead finds an epic battle of his own, pitting ancient enemies against one another—with not just the Enterprise, but her crew as the spoils of war.

Lost and out of contact with Earth for an entire year, Pike and his trusted first officer, Number One, struggle to find and reunite the ship’s crew—all while Science Officer Spock confronts a mystery that puts even his exceptional skills to the test…with more than their own survival possibly riding on the outcome….

New Visions #21: The Enemy of My Enemy preview

Out this week is issue 21 of  John Byrne's New Visions photocomic. The headline story of the book features an entertaining team-up of Kirk with Kor, in The Enemy of My Enemy. Like many books in the series, there is also a second story, and this time it takes up a good two-fifths of the book in a delightfully quirky Pike-era story with a H.G. Wells crossover, The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.

As ever IDW have released a five-page preview from the book, from the first story, continue below to check it out.

New Visions: The Cage preview

Out this week is a special issue in John Byrne's New Visions photo-comic series, an adaption of the Star Trek pilot episode, The Cage.

If you've been following the New Visions series, this is quite an interesting issue to look at in regards to how Byrne constructs the page. Of course when he is tells us new stories Byrne has to construct the images from the stills to create the new story he wants to tell. But here you can directly contrast the differences between the shots on screen, and how Byrne has reconfigured them to work as a comic.

Continue below for a five page preview from the issue:

Book bits: New covers and blurbs for 2015 books, and more.

It's a big books news day, as Pocket Books have released blurbs for the last four novels of the publishing year, which include a Pike-era story, the next books in the Seekers and Titan series, and a blurb that is sure to make fans of the DS9 relaunch do back-flips and set off fireworks! Continue below for all those, and more. But first:

Coming in July is the first novella in a New Frontier ebook trilogy, by Peter David of course. Previously reported as being titled Return, StarTrek.com have now revealed a revised title, The Returned, and the cover and blurb for the first book in the series, which features an intriguing choice of ship given when this is taking place in the New Frontier continuity:

Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the crew of the U.S.S. Excalibur are back, picking up three months after the stunning events depicted in New Frontier: Blind Man’s Bluff. Calhoun's search of Xenex has failed to find any survivors, and now he is bound and determined to track down the race that killed them—the D'myurj and their associates, the Brethren--and exact vengeance upon them. His search will take the Excalibur crew into a pocket universe, where he discovers not only the homeworld of the D’myurj, but another race that shares Calhoun's determination to obliterate his opponents. But is this new race truly an ally…or an even greater threat?
Simon and Schuster tend to release their novel blurbs a third of a year at a time, so there latest updates give us summaries of the October to January books, the last four of the 2015 publishing schedule. All four are now available to pre-order, while the blurbs themselves are so far only found on Simon and Schuster's digital catalogue. Continue after the jump to check them out:
