IDW Year Five comic previews and art

IDW have recently released details of their July releases, which include just one new Star Trek comic, the epilogue to soon to be concluded TOS: Year Five maxiseries. Continue below for details of that, more Year Five art, and other Star Trek comics updates.

Year Five #25: Experienced in Loss(ad), will be a bumper-size epilogue to the series, which will be written by all the writers from the series: Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Jody Houser, Brandon Easton, Jim McCann, and Paul Cornell. They are joined by almost all of the series' artists: Angel Hernandez, Silvia Califano, Stephen Thompson, and Christopher Jones. Here's the solicitation blurb:

The five-year mission may be over, but now it’s time for the next adventure to begin. Join the crew of the Enterprise for the end of an old chapter and the beginning of a new.  This special, oversized epilogue from the entire Year Five writing team bridges the gap between the end of the five-year mission and the beginning of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

As usual, the book will be offered in two different covers. The main one, not yet revealed, will be by Stephen Thompson, whil J.J. Lendl provided the rarer retail incentive cover, which has been previewed:

Year Five #20: The Raptor's Wings, part 1 preview

Out this week is issue twenty(ad) of IDW's Star Trek: Year Five(ad) comic series, which is the first half of a new story arc, The Raptor's Wings, written by Brandon Easton with art by Silvia Califano, and colour from DC Alonso. This chapter sees Spock transported back to the Time of Awakening, giving us a look at Mad Max-esque ancient Vulcan, and a fresh take on Vulcan and Romulan history. Half way in, this is already a highlight of a generally excellent series!

As ever the book is offered in two different covers. The main cover(ad) by Stephen Thompson gives us Spock standing beneath those raptor's wings. Alternatively, the rarer retail incentive cover(ad) by JJ Lendl is a retro movie style poster also featuring Spock, this time within the silhouette of the raptor as seen on the Romulan Bird of Prey.

Year Five #18: On the Death of a Friend part 1 preview

Out this week was the eighteenth issue(ad) of IDW's TOS comic maxiseries Year Five(ad), and the first part of a new story-arc in the series, On the Death of a Friend, which continues the alarmingly prescient run of story in the series (following the recent demagogic presidential election story), with a plague-based medical mystery!

This new story arc is written by Jim McCann, with art by Angel Hernandez, and colours by Fran Gamboa. After an issue off the main cover team returns, with Stephen Thompson (coloured by Charlie Kirchoff) delivering the beautiful virus filled Doctor McCoy main cover(ad). Or alternatively there's a rarer retail incentive(ad) design by JJ Lendl, also featuring McCoy, along with Isis hinting at other elements of the story, in a retro poster design.

Year Five #17: Weaker Than Man preview

This week brought Weaker Than Man, issue seventeen(ad) of IDW's TOS comic maxiseries Year Five(ad), which is a special one-off story filling in the back story of Gary Seven. The book is written by Jackson Lanzig and Colin Kelly, with JK Woodward dropping into the series to provided painted artwork.

This issue is offered in two covers, either the main one(ad) , featuring Gary Seven and Isis (in both human and cat form), by Mark Laming, or a rarer retail incentive(ad) design by JJ Lendl, also featuring Seven and Isis, in a cool poster-style design, with them surrounded by Tholian ships.

Continue below to check out the covers, a five-page preview, plus a look at some other artwork from this series.

Before that just one other comic update of note: IDW recently released their March solicitations, which unusually featured no Star Trek comics at all! Looks like we're having a little break soon. But not super soon, as their are two books out next week, including the net Year Five issue already! Before then, here's issue seventeen:

IDW's Star Trek comics for February

IDW have revealed their Star Trek comics for February, which spanning TOS, TNG, and Voyager include two new books, and reprint of a classic. Continue below for all the details.

Year Five(ad) #20: The Raptor's Wings

Written by Brandon Easton, with art by Silvia Califano.

As the crew of the Enterprise moves toward an uncertain future, one of their own will be pulled into a violent past! While investigating a mysterious structure on Vulcan, Spock vanishes. As the crew tries to find him, Spock must fight to survive as he navigates the painful past of his home planet. The final voyages of the original crew continue in this time-hoping adventure from writer Brandon Easton (Transformers: War for Cybertron, Thundercats) and artist Silvia Califano (Star Trek: Year Five, X-Files: Case Files)

From the title, covers, and snippets in the blurb here, I think we're going to see some of the Vulcan/Romulan schism. through the eyes of time traveling Spock. Cool!

The book is offered in two covers from the regular artists for the series, and both have been revealed already. The main cover by Stephen Thompson features a traditionally Vulcan-clothed Spock under a looming Romulan emblem (TrekMovie released the final cover, but you can see the line art on Previews). There's also a retail incentive by J.J. Lendl, which gives us a retro poster for the story, and also features Spock, among Vulcan and Romulan iconography.

Year Five #16: Vote Mudd part 2 preview

Out this week is the sixteenth issue(ad) of IDW's TOS comic maxiseries Year Five(ad), and part two of the Vote Mudd story arc, featuring Harry Mudd's run for Federation President. This arc also features Andor, androids, and the Aegis, in the form of Gary Seven and Isis. A packed story, with it seems much more to come in future chapters of the ongoing Year Five story.

This book is written by Jody Houser, with art by Silvia Califano, and colour from Charlie Kirchoff. It is offered in two covers, either the main one(ad) by Stephen Thompson (also coloured by Kirchoff) featuring a Mudd rally; or the retail incentive(ad) by JJ Lendl, the latest in their travel poster sub-series of covers, which in this instance also hides a sneaky portrait of an Andorian!

Continue below to check out the covers, a five-page preview, and a look at some of the artwork from this series.

Year Five #15: Vote Mudd preview

This week brings us fifteenth issue(ad) of IDW's TOS comic maxiseries Year Five(ad), which launches a new story arc focused on Harry Mudd's run for Federation president.

This series was delayed a few months earlier in the year due to Covid, so what might have come a couple of months ago as a warning of political events to come, has instead managed to land right on top of the US presidential elections, with Mudd slipping into Trump's analogous shoes all the more vividly as a result - Although Mudd is decidedly more charming, if also a little menacing, and this is a delightfully playful issue thanks to his long history with Kirk at this point in the timeline.

Interestingly the image of Mudd is that of Rainn Wilson, as seen in Discovery, no doubt helping to side-step the issues of actor likeness that have long tripped up appearances by the character in previous comics.

This new story arc is written by Jody Houser, with art by Silvia Califano, and colour from Charlie Kirchoff. The book is offered in two covers, either the main one(ad) by Steve Thompson (also coloured by Kirchoff), or the retail incentive(ad) by JJ Lendl, which this issue take the form of pro-Mudd graffiti - Lendl's covers for the first part of a story arc normally give us the title, so we can probably take that to be Vote Mudd, or maybe Vote Mudd For Federation President

Continue below to check out the covers, a five-page preview, and a look at some of the artwork from this issue.

IDW have released their solicitations for January, which include two new Star Trek comics, both continuing current runs. Continue below for all the details of those, plus what sadly looks to be the last batch of title announcements from Eaglemoss' Star Trek Graphic Novel Collection.

Year Five(ad) #19 will be part two of the medical story On the Death of a Friend. The creative team continues from the previous issue, with the book written by Jim McCann, and art by Angel Hernandez. Here's the blurb:

A pandemic raging across Alpha Centauri. A powerful enemy aboard the Enterprise. With death lurking around every corner, the crew will face down one of their greatest challenges yet in the shocking conclusion to this episode from Eisner-winning writer Jim McCann (Return of the Dapper Men) and superstar artist Angel Hernandez (Star Trek: Picard)!

This issue will be available in the usual two covers. Either the main cover by Stephen Thompson, with a rather scary appearance by Isis. Or there's the retail incentive by J.J. Lendl, their latest travel poster, with a bit of a twist this time.

IDW's Star Trek comics for December, latest Graphic Novel Collection titles, and more.

IDW and Eaglemoss have announced the latest new Star Trek comic titles, including two new books on the way from IDW in December, and four more issues of the Graphic Novel Collection reprints series. Continue below for all the details of those, and other Star Trek comics news.

December will see the continuation of IDW's TOS maxiseries Year Five, with the start of a new story arc, On the Death of a Friend, in issue 18. This will be written by Jim McCann, with art by Angel Hernandez. Here's the blurb:
The Enterprise receives a distress call from Alpha Centauri and arrives to find a planet in the midst of a deadly global pandemic. But is nature responsible for this new virus, or is there something more sinister at play? The final voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise continue in this new episode from Eisner-winning writer Jim McCann (Return of the Dapper Men) and superstar artist Angel Hernandez (Star Trek: Picard)!
The regular cover team returns with the usual options of two covers for this series, both featuring Doctor McCoy. There's either the main cover by Stephen Thompson with some cool sciencey visuals, or the rarer retail incentive retro-movie-poster-style piece by J.J. Lendl, with a bit more of a mad scientist look - The latter also features a black cat, surely indicating another appearance in the series from Gary Seven and Isis?

Year Five #14: Guide of Fire, part 2 preview

Out this week is issue 14 of IDW's TOS: Year Five comic, part-two of the Klingon-focused story Guide of Fire.

The book features some spectacularly dynamic artwork from Angel Hernandez, with lots of reds from colourist Fran Gamboa, and a story that pays off almost every TOS Klingon episode, from writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, who once again deliver another compelling chapter in what is easily one of the best Star Trek comic series ever written.

The usual cover artists for the series give us two cover options. Either the main cover by Stephen Thompson and colourist Charlie Kirchoff, featuring a bloodied Kirk. Or the retail incentive cover from JJ Lendl, the latest in their travel poster series, inviting you to visit the Klingon Empire, or to wait for their invasion to bring it to you!

Continue below to check out those, a five page preview from the book, and details of the latest omnibus from the series.

IDW's November Star Trek comics, latest Graphic Novel Collection titles, and more comic updates

IDW have announced their solicitations for November, which include the start of a new Voyager miniseries, and a Gary Seven origin story! Continue below for all the details of those, plus the latest books in Eaglemoss' Star Trek Graphic Novel Collection (including the first ever reprint of a super rare Brazilian comic), and other Star Trek comic updates.

The four-part series will be focused on Seven of Nine, and is called Seven’s Reckoning, and will be written by Dave Baker, with art by Angel Hernandez, and colours by Ronda Pattison. Here's the blurb for issue one:
After Voyager encounters a damaged alien ship deep in the Delta quadrant, what at first seems to be a simple repair mission becomes much more complicated for Seven of Nine as she becomes involved in an ancient conflict that will put her newfound humanity to the test. From writer Dave Baker (Action Hospital, F*ck Off Squad, Star Trek: Waypoint) and artist Angel Hernandez (Star Trek: Picard Countdown, Star Trek/Green Lantern).
The first issue will be offered in at least three covers. Either the A cover by Angel Hernandez, a B photo-cover, or a retail incentive cover by Jefferey Veregge. So far just the Hernandez design has been revealed:
