IDW reprints in Brazil

If like me you're fascinated and intrigued by the international reprints of all things Star Trek then you're in luck, as thanks to TrekWeb's Gustavo Leao (who posted an image of the most recent reprint in question on the IDW forums) I've been finding out about the Brazilian reprints (in Portuguese of course) of IDW titles coming from the publisher Devir. They're a little behind and a little slow, having started in 2008 and so far only just got to the first Alien Spotlight series. Here's what they've done so far:

Klingons: Blood Will Tell, aka Klingons: Herança de Sangue
-Published in November 2008
-Translated by Antônio C. Neto, with Portuguese lettering by Reinaldo Fraga
-If google's translations are cirrect this book included some sort of technical manual for the D7 class in addition to the comic series!

Year Four, aka Ano Quatro
-Published in May 2009
-Translated by Anthony C. Grandson

The Space Between, aka Interlúdios
-Published in July 2009
-Translated by Anthony C. Grandson, with Portuguese lettering by Reinaldo Fraga
Alien Spotlight, aka Raças Alienígenas (Alien Races)
-Published in August 2010

IDW bits

From Joe Corrney's website we have the first look at his cover for the fifth and final issue of the Ghosts miniseries:And from Amazon a cover for the omnibus of Alien Spotlight II (though I'm assuming not final as the Enterprise is rendered rather roughly and it omits the Cardassian issue at the moment):
Also from Amazon the first hints at a new book in IDW's Omnibus series, this time collecting several of their own miniseries. Star Trek Omnibus: The Original Series will apparently contain IDW's Year Four, The Enterprise Experiment, Klingons: Blood Will Tell, and the TOS Alien Spotlight issues (the other series are all IDW's earliest TOS series, so maybe just from Alien Spotlight I?).

Enterprise Experiment, a review

So, months after the completion of the series I finally got a hold of the final issue of Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment this week. And so finally can offer up my thoughts on the whole thing.

Having just read through the whole saga my thoughts are mixed, it was much better than I remembered it being on the first read, but there was still something just a little off about it.

The story managed to do quite a lot, it was big, yet it was delivered in a way that didn’t make it too over the top. The political side of the tale I found most engaging, the balance between the three big TOS powers and the effects on it by the Organians and cloaking technology were explored with some depth and with great success.

That said it feels unfortunately repetitive, I’m sure the end of the Organian peace treaty has been done a couple of times before (as has the origin of the galactic barrier). That is forgivable as happening in older publications by other producers, what I find quite bizarre is that implication in this series that it was the events shown here that prompted the Klingons and Romulans to ally (the previous Romulan D7’s apparently being the consequence of one-off purchases between the empires) which rather flies in the face of how the alliance was formed as shown by IDW in John Byrne’s Romulan Alien Spotlight released before this series, and his follow-up two-parter Romulans: The Hollow Crown which was released just a month after the final issue of this series.

The final issue of the series in-particular leaves some massive dangling threads, showing Starfleet making use of cloaking technology and leaving a big unanswered question about what exactly it is the Edosians (not using the lit-verse name of Triexians to my disappointment) have ahead of them. I really hope both of these are answered in the not too distant future, they seem way too big to just be forgotten about.

One element of the series I very strongly disliked was the use of flashbacks and internal monologues/log entries for Kirk, Spock and McCoy to try and introduce a sort B-story of how the three rely on Starfleet for family and generally have made a mess of their actual families. This again seems a little too familiar, and in the context of the series it’s little more than a somewhat irritating distraction. Flashbacks used in the series also had a slight problem of sometimes occurring unannounced; the second issue opens with a flashback and then jumps back to the “present” without any visual signature change or notation of events happening at different times, which was rather confusing at first! Though on the whole most flashbacks are marked with rounded corner panels.

On the art in general: I don’t place Gordon Purcell anywhere near the top of my favourite artists list, and this series has done nothing to change that. His art is perfectly functional; it services the story, and as he so often praised for his likenesses are consistently spot-on. However there is rarely any flare to the art, it doesn’t have an especially eye-catching style, nor does it ever really play with layout or do much exciting. It works to tell the story but it’s not especially interesting.

All in all this series was, ok, not top of the IDW pile, but not quite at the bottom either. If you’re a big TOS fan I imagine you would enjoy it. If you like the character Arex it’s a must get, as he is used extensively and to good effect. If a decent sequel comes along to pull together the dangling threads left by the series it might gain it a bit more value as a lead into that. At the moment though, I think it can be summed up with: *shrug*.

Final issue of the Enterprise Experiment finally out in the UK!

A mere three and a half months late, and after the release of the omnibus book, the final issue of Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment has finally made to the UK! I've no idea why it took so long, and I rather irritated my comic book guy in contacting Chris Ryall to try and find out. I also don't know the extent of this issue, I know my local shop didn't have it, and I was contacted by someone in Wales who was also wondering what was taking so long. Did it effect the whole country, or even further afield, I'd be interested to know readers if you had trouble getting this issue.

IDW November

ComicNewsi have posted IDW's solicitations for November, which include four Star Trek titles, two comic books and two omnibuses, including a surprising fifth issue of Mirror Images (originally announced a s a four issue series):

Mirror Images #5
Final issue! Captain Pike has remained one step ahead of Kirk's machinations so far, but how long can his luck last? And has he lost an ally in Mr. Spock? And on what side is the Enterprise's hidden power player: Leonard McCoy? The final gambit in James T. Kirk's rise to power is played!

The release also came with a cover, however it appears to be a David Messina cover for the third issue of the series (the TNG side-step). UPDATE: It's apparently a page of interior art from the third issue (according to one of the writers):

UPDATE 2: To add more confusion, in Comics Continuum's version of the solicitation listing the image is shown as a cover with titles and very oddly "issue #4" marked on it (which makes no sense, issue four is not the TNG one...)

The Last Generation #1
Starfleet is no more. The Federation lies in ruin. And the Klingons have conquered Earth. But a resistance, led by Jean-Luc Picard, seeks to free humanity from Klingon rule. And now, finally, it may have the means to do it: An android named Data, who has scrutinized the timeline and discovered that things are not as they should be. A crucial moment, buried in the past, has gone awry—and as the Klingon warlord Worf closes in, time itself is running out... For the first time ever, IDW Publishing proudly joins forces with Simon & Shuster's Pocket Books division, to deliver a Myriad Universe title in conjunction with the Star Trek alternate-universe prose novels of the same name. Plus, a special bonus excerpt from one of the Myriad Universe novels!

The solicitation specifies 32 ad-free pages, so looks like that excerpt will eat up all the usual editorial content space.

Archives #2: The Best of The Borg
"We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships..." Ever since those chilling words reverberated throughout the bridge of the Enterprise, the Borg have been the most dangerous and relentless adversary of the entire Star Trek universe. Now, collected for the first time, their most fearsome adventures on the comics page! Reprinted from both the Marvel and DC Star Trek runs, these stories are must-reads for any fans of the Collective!

Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment omnibus
Dorothy Fontana, the writer from the original TV series, as well as The Animated Series, The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine, co-writes Star Trek: The Enterprise Experiment, an all-new tale set in the unexplored fourth year of the U.S.S. Enterprise’s legendary five-year mission. A sequel to the classic episode "The Enterprise Incident"—originally written by Fontana herself—where Kirk and Spock found themselves trapped on an Enterprise out of phase with space itself and facing a plot of revenge from Romulans!

And then there were two...

Comics News International have posted IDW's solicitations for August. Which are oddly empty in terms of Star Trek releases. Not only is there not a new miniseries (Alien Spotlight II?) to fill the gap left by the completion of the New Frontier miniseries, but there is also a missing issue: August should have issue three of the Mirror Images miniseries, but the issue is not listed in the solicitation. Error or delay? I know not.

The month does include a new omnibus and this posting sees the first look at the cover for the forth issue of the Assignment: Earth miniseries.

Assignment: Earth #4
Mysterious alien technology. Senseless death. And a growing awareness that there may be those beyond our world who don’t want to see Earth survive! Seven and Roberta face their greatest challenge yet… an invasion from the most distant regions of the Galaxy! The penultimate issue in John Byrne’s first-ever Star Trek spin-off!

The Enterprise Experiment #5
In the final chapter of The Enterprise Experiment, a great discovery sends the crew of the Starship: Enterprise on a mission to locate an ancient outpost before the Klingon fleet can seize its power for themselves. The answers Kirk and his crew have sought will finally come into focus, as a long-lived mystery is revealed, and new alliances change the political landscape and cause ramifications long into the future. D.C. Fontana, Derek Chester, and Gordon Purcell conclude their Original Series adventure!

Intelligence Gathering omnibus
One year ago IDW’s Star Trek comics launched with Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Space Between, a series of six stand-alone issues. Now, prepare for the latest voyage of the Enterprise as the creative team that brought you Klingons: Blood Will Tell tackles an all-new TNG mini-series. Collecting all five issues of the Intelligence Gathering series, written by Scott & David Tipton, with art by David Messina, and amazing photorealistic variant covers by Joe Corroney.

The Enterprise Experiment preview

On his blog, IDW editor Chris Ryall has posted the first preview of interior art for the soon start miniseries Star Trek: Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment.

Big sigh of relief: none of that four "widescreens" non-sense going on here. He also posted this photo cover for the first issue:

And the whole thing was accompanied by a press release for the remastered version of The Enterprise Incident, to which Ryall commented: "some of the digital upgrades actually tie the episode even more closely in with the comic book", so hopefully that means more D7 with Romulan paintjobs. He also took the opportunity to give us a date, issue one will be out in just under fortnight on April 16.

See the original post for that press release and a look at the final presentation of the Sharp Brothers’ cove for the issue.

IDW July releases

Comics Continuum have posted IDWs solicitations for July, which include four Star Trek titles, and the release of two new covers:

Turnaround #5
The final confrontation. Outgunned, outmanned, but never outwitted, Mackenzie Calhoun and the crew of the Excalibur face off against the masterminds behind the theft of the Paradox while the fate of Bravo Station, and Calhoun's wife, Admiral Shelby, hang in the balance.

The Enterprise Experiment #4
The untold fourth year of the Enterprise's legendary five-year mission continues! The Klingons have discovered what appears to be a Preserver obelisk, but can the Enterprise prevent them from unlocking its secrets before it's too late? And what of the Organian truce? The answer lies within!

Assignment Earth #3
Crisis on campus! The time: 1970. The place: Earth. The situation: Critical! Comic book legend John Byrne continues his first-ever Star Trek miniseries, featuring the enigmatic interstellar spy Gary Seven and his intrepid assistant, Roberta. Following their encounter with Kirk and the Enterprise crew, the duo must go undercover in the Halls of Ivy as students burn their draft cards and National Guard troops patrol the quad. What is the terrible truth behind rumors of an army of super-soldiers -- whose purpose may be much more sinsister than fighting in the jungles of Southeast Asia?

Mirror Images #2
Murderous intrigue continues aboard the I.S.S. Enterprise, as First Officer James T. Kirk sets in motion the machinations that will result in the murder of Captain Christopher Pike, and the ultimate prize for Kirk: the captain's chair! But what does Spock have to say about it -- and whose side is he on? A dark, twisted reflection of Starfleet history continues!

And as this sees the final issue of the New Frontier series, if IDW intend to keep up their four issues a month scheme, that means there must be a new miniseries announcement in the not to distant future...

IDW June releases

Comics Continuum have posted IDW's solicitations for June, which includes four Star Trek titles, among them the first issue of the mirror universe miniseries Mirror Images and the first look at the cover for the forth issue of the New Frontier miniseries Turnaround:

NF: Turnaround #4
Nothing in the previous issues has been what it seemed as the true hijacker of the Paradox stands revealed, and Captain Calhoun finds himself face-to-face with the mastermind behind the entire plot. There are only two questions to be faced: Can he stop his opponent... and does he even want to?

TOS: Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment #3
The untold fourth year of the Enterprise's legendary five-year mission continues! A mysterious discovery on Loren 5 sets the stage for conflict between the Klingon Empire and the Federation. With the sudden absence of Organian intervention between the two powers, it could mean all out war. Now the crew of the Enterprise find themselves caught up in a race to discover the true nature of the secrets of Loren 5, as well as why the Organians have disappeared.

TOS: Assignment Earth #2
The first-ever Star Trek series from Byrne continues! Telling the story of the Assignment: Earth Trek spin-off from Gene Roddenberry that never came to pass, a time-traveling U.S.S. Enterprise intersects with Gary Seven's efforts to save the future from a 1969 crisis that only he and his assistant Roberta can avert!

TOS: Mirror Images #1
IDW Publishing's Star Trek: Second Stage continues! A story from one of the most popular corners of Star Trek canon, the Mirror Universe! In the "Mirror, Mirror" episode from The Original Series, an evil Kirk commanded the I.S.S. Enterprise for the Terran Empire. But how did he rise to power, in a universe where treachery is rewarded as much as accomplishment? Witness Mirror-Kirk's plot to unseat Captain Pike and seize command!

Andrew Steven Harris talks IDW Star Trek

The Fanboy Face-Off podcast have released an interview with IDW's Star Trek editor Andrew Steven Harris. Harris talked quite widely about his work on Star Trek, some of his personal history and IDW and the comics industry in general. Some of the highlights of the Star Trek talk (which the podcast was predominantly about) were:

Talking about the New Frontier miniseries, Turnaround, he described it as a "Star Trek version of The Hunt for Red October". And continuing to talk about the Second Stage titles went on to note how well D.C. Fontana and Derek Chester had got into comic book writing; their script for The Enterprise Experiment was apparently returned from approval by CBS Paramount with no changes.

On the potential for future miniseries he once again noted how much demand there is for DS9 comics, from both fans and creators pitching to IDW, but also noted how it is something of a juggling act for IDW to do DS9; as despite the demand DS9 universally sells less than TOS and TNG. However if IDW can iron out the finances of it they are 100% for doing DS9.

Similarly he mentioned the popularity of Pike stories and how they face a similar problem of potentially under performing compared to comics featuring Kirk. (so go and buy the Vulcan and Orion Alien Spotlights people, they need to eclipse the sales of Kirk!) He also name dropped Captain April as something to test the viability of in a one shot... might we have an April era Alien Spotlight on the horizon?

Finally, on his Alien Spotlight on the Borg, he noted how he originally had a twenty-four page script for the issue but was forced to cut it down to the usual twenty-two pages to fit in the art budget for the issue. And noted how proud he was of the issue which has been one of the most positively reviewed Trek comics IDW have produced.

Listen to the full interview, in which Harris talks more about IDW, himself and Star Trek; including his desire get Paramount to make The Animated Series canon, here.

IDW May issues

Comics Continuum have published IDW’s solicitations for May, the first month to feature four Star Trek titles (plus a Star Trek omnibus book). The posting also included the first look at Rob and Joe Sharp's cover art for The Enterprise Experiment #2. Here's what's on the way:

Intelligence Gathering #5
It's the final issue of the all-new adventure of the crew of the Enterprise-D! Someone's been leading Captain Picard and company across the galaxy -- but why? And who's behind it? The stakes are raised on a planetary scale.

New Frontier #3
Mackenzie Calhoun has caught up with the fleeing Admiral Jellico, and the Excalibur is prepared to blow both Jellico and the time ship out of space... until Calhoun discovers the shocking truth of who is behind both Jellico's apparently treasonous acts and the theft of the experimental vessel.

The Enterprise Experiment #2
The untold fourth year of the Enterprise's legendary five-year mission continues! With the Enterprise crippled and out of phase in a cloaking experiment gone haywire, a Romulan strike force storms the starship, looking for revenge over their stolen technology. Kirk and Spock, meanwhile, must find a way to repel the invaders, while at the same time reverse the experiment and restore the ship -- before it fades away completely!

Assignment Earth #1
IDW's Star Trek: Second Stage continues, as comics icon John Byrne unveils the first-ever Star Trek series of his decades-spanning career! The 1968 TV episode "Assignment Earth" had been the Season Two finale for the original Star Trek series, and was intended by Gene Roddenberry as the pilot for a spin-off series that never came to pass. Now, Byrne delivers the series 40 years after it would have debuted, recounting the adventures of interstellar agent Gary Seven and his Earth-born assistant as they covertly confront threats to the past so that they can save Star Trek's future. Byrne will both write and draw the series, which steps one year forward with each installment, beginning with 1968, the year that the spin-off series would have appeared.

Alien Spotlight omnibus
In the vast Star Trek universe, many diverse alien races abound, and now they finally get their due! Presenting a collection of six tales set throughout the Star Trek galaxy, each by a different creative team and featuring a different Star Trek alien race. This collection includes stories of the Gorn, Vulcans, Andorians, Orions, Borg, and Romulans, and features guest-stars such as Captains Pike, Janeway and Terrell, along with familiar faces like Picard, Spock, and many others.
