IDW omnibuses

IDW's December solicitations revealed/confirmed two new omnibus books on the way: The 100 Page Spectacular format must be doing quite well, as a third volume for 2012 is on the way. They describe the Winter 2012 edition as follows:
Explore the amazing worlds of Star Trek through our continuing series of 100-page spectaculars! How do you deal with killing a legend? Find out in the story of Captain Harriman, the notorious commander of the Enterprise when Captain James T. Kirk was lost and presumed dead. Guest starring Dr. McCoy! Discover the devious inner workings of the Romulan military! Re-enter the Mirror Universe as Kirk's Doppelgänger plots to overthrow his superior... Captain Pike -- And more!

The solicitation credits Marc Guggenheim, Scott Tipton, and more as writers, with art from David Messina, J.K. Woodward, and more. From that it's clear Captain's Log: Harriman, and probably the first issue of Mirror Images will feature. The Romulan story could be one of many; the first Alien Spotlight: Romulans has already been reprinted in the first 100 Page Spectacular, but that still leaves an opening for the second Romulan story in the Alien Spotlight series, which seems like the most likely candidate from the vague description. Other options include the rest of John Byrne's Romulan saga, or the TNG series Intelligence Gathering. The 100 page format should also accommodate a fourth single issue story as well.

At the decidedly more generous end of the omnibus scale, December will also see the latest edition of IDW's bulky omnibus series, with the Star Trek: The Next Generation Omnibus. The solicitation confirms the contents as IDW's early TNG miniseries:
Star Trek: The Next Generation Omnibus collects 4 graphic novels into one monstrous book! The Space Between, Intelligence Gathering, The Last Generation, and Ghosts.

Meanwhile over in the Czech Republic the Star Trek: The Original Series Omnibus just came out, translated into Czech by Anthony Martin for NakladatelstvĂ BB/art:

This and That

A few little updates from various things Trek:

The second Starfleet Academy book is now titled The Edge, rather than the earlier working title The Competitive Edge. The Simon and Schuster website now also confirms Amazon's recent listings of a third and fourth book in the series in by Rudy Josephs in April and Rick Barba in May next year.

Cross Cult have released an updated version of the cover artwork for their German language edition of A Stitch in Time. Looks like this:

As brought to my attention by Therin of Andor's blog, an Australian company, Wilkinson Publishing, has now started reprinting IDW Star Trek titles for release in the Australian market. They started a couple of weeks ago with TNG: Ghosts and Motion Picture Trilogy omnibuses, and with the first issue of Burden of Knowledge, and have now released the second issue of that series as well. Therin has a comparison of that second issue on his site. And a press release about this new arrangement can be found, here.

UPDATE: Having looked into Wilkinson a bit more, it seems they have release the Ghosts omnibus in hardcover! Nice.

Mark Rademaker has announced his plans for the Voyager Full Circle refit. The plan includes several updates to the hull, new warp nacelles and a new deflector. A full listing can be found on his blog.

And finally, Star Trek Online players can now play as an Excelsior class!

IDW bits

From Joe Corrney's website we have the first look at his cover for the fifth and final issue of the Ghosts miniseries:And from Amazon a cover for the omnibus of Alien Spotlight II (though I'm assuming not final as the Enterprise is rendered rather roughly and it omits the Cardassian issue at the moment):
Also from Amazon the first hints at a new book in IDW's Omnibus series, this time collecting several of their own miniseries. Star Trek Omnibus: The Original Series will apparently contain IDW's Year Four, The Enterprise Experiment, Klingons: Blood Will Tell, and the TOS Alien Spotlight issues (the other series are all IDW's earliest TOS series, so maybe just from Alien Spotlight I?).

Comics stuff

Various comics bits: Chris Ryall posted a showy page from last week's Romulans: Schism premier issue, well worth checking out:This week's Spock: Reflections got a whole six-page preview on Comic Continuum, here's one of them, featuring a familiar starbase design:Additionally David Messina has posted the same page on his blog without the text, as well as a page from Nero issue two.

Finally Comic Books Resources published an interview with Zander Cannon, the writer of the forthcoming new TNG series Ghosts, which he decribed as follows: "Ghosts' starts out as a routine rescue mission above a planet on which there are two feuding nations, one of which is a Federation ally. After rescuing the lone survivor of the disaster, the crew of the Enterprise finds that he seems to be haunted by phantoms, one of which he says is Captain Picard. While they unravel that mystery, the tensions heat up between the two nations, and the crew has to investigate claims of espionage, kidnapping, and murder while keeping themselves out of harm's way."

...and one more think, on the TrekBSS Keith R.A. DeCandido sneakily slipped out he has just handed a new comic script in to IDW (presumably for a Star Trek one...)

New IDW news from Mr Harris

Andrew Steven Harris has posted information on a whole bunch of new Trek stuff from IDW, that he expects official announcements for very soon.

On the DS9 front IDW apparently have an artist lined up, a painter, who has done covers for IDW Trek comics before (which gives a few possibilities, J.K. Woodward is the name that immediately pops into my head).

On the TNG front there's to be a new series titled Ghosts, which will be set in the TV era and see the TNG crew dealing with two warring factions on a world that wants to join the Federation (nothing like the soon to conclude TOS: Mission's End then...). The series will apparently take a CSI sort of style. That series has a writer, Alexander Cannon, and will have at least some covers by Joe Corroney (like that one>).

The previously mentioned Sulu-Excelsior story it turns out will be part of a new spotlight-style series called Captain's Log. Like Alien Spotlight the series will feature multiple creative teams, this time focusing on different commanding officers - Harris mentioned Jellico and Garrett, and fingers crossed for Riker on the Titan.

Beyond that Harris anticipates more omnibuses from IDW, and possibly deluxe reprints of the movie tie-in series to cash in on the DVD release. And looking at IDW's general approach wonders whether we might see an on-going Trek series some time soon, in line with similar series announced for other IDW properties.

Read all the details, here.
