Star Trek Magazine is reborn, as Star Trek Explorer

Titan Magazine's long-running Star Trek Magazine is getting a relaunch, with this October bringing us issue #1 of the new Star Trek Explorer. Check out the details of that first issue, and other Titan Publishing Star Trek releases, below:

Star Trek Explorer: The Official Magazine(ad)  is set to feature interviews, behind the scenes coverage, and new fiction content. Here's the blurb for the first issue:

STAR TREK EXPLORER THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE LAUNCHES A NEW ERA OF BELOVED SHOW! Featuring exclusive interviews with the cast and crew of Star Trek series as well as behind-the-scenes content you won't find anywhere else! This new magazine will also feature Star Trek exclusive fiction! Plus much more!

The covers for the first issue suggest an emphasis on interviews with the Discovery cast and crew for this issue, alongside a Kirk-focused "mini-magazine", a "Star Trek 101" explainer feature, and the promised "exclusive fiction". The previous Star Trek Magazine has before featured Star Trek Online based short stories, and excerpts form Star Trek novels; will this new format continue those sort of things, or maybe offer so some completely new short stories from different corners of the Trekverse? The only clue is that Disco-era Captain Pike is used to illustrate the new fiction tag on the cover (alongside "all-new magazine" and "new features" mind you).

The book will be offered in two covers, either the regular edition(ad) featuring Burnham in an EV suit, of the Previews exclusive edition(ad) using Tim Anderson's TOS art from the 50 Artists 50 Years collection(ad).

New listings have revealed covers and blurbs for a couple of forthcoming starships books from Eaglemoss. Continue below for the details of those, plus some other book updates.

First up, the latest volume in the Star Trek Shipyards series will feature The Borg and Delta Quadrant ships, of course mostly from Voyager (the Borg ships should include a few from other series). This series is largely built upon the in-universe segments from the magazines from The Official Starships Collection, thought typically feature a few added entries for ships that haven't been made as a model in that series yet, plus some extra artwork. Here is a not-final cover:

Titan Magazines Discovery companion, and Star Trek Magazine updates

Just starting to turn up on bookshelves now is one of the latest Star Trek releases from Titan, the Star Trek Discovery Special Edition: The Making of Season 1, a companion to the first series including an episode guide, behind the scenes coverage, interviews, and more. Continue below to check out lots of preview pages and covers for that releases, plus other updates from the Star Trek Magazine.

Like last year's Discovery "Collector's Edition" from Titan, this special edition is being released in both magazine and book formats; in fact it's got no less than four different releases! There's the hardcover format release using one of Paul Shippers Discovery illustrations for the cover. The regular magazine format release is an assemblage of promo photos and typically magazine-ish text shouting about the contents. And then more obscurely there's a Previews exclusive tri-coloured Vulcan/Starfleet/Klingon cover, and already available for a month, the Star Trak Las Vegas exclusive cover.

Non-fiction book bits: New Eaglemoss starships books, Stellar Cartography update, and novelty book previews

Lots of Star Trek non-fiction updates today, including previews of up-coming releases, and new details on the Stellar Cartography re-issue. But first, let's take a look at Eaglemoss' latest:

As promised, the Star Trek Shipyards series looks set to expand beyond its initial Starfleet offerings, with the third book in the series due to explore The Klingon Fleet. The details of this come from a Canadian online catalogue, which anticipates a release in May next year, credits Ben Robinson. The book written by Joe Nazarro will cover the entire span of Eaves work on Star Trek, which includes every Star Trek movie since The Final Frontier, and work on TNG, DS9, Enterprise, and Discovery! Book Bits: Star Trek Little Golden Books, and previews from other non-fiction and novelties

Got quite a variety of Star Trek non-fiction and novelty book updates today, including more on Kirk Fu, Incredibuilds and the Lost Scenes book. But first, something entirely new...

Penguin Random House have revealed Star Trek will soon be joining the long running Little Golden Book series, with two TOS inspired books due for release next January.

Little Golden Books are charmingly illustrated childrens books, that traditionally include non-fiction introductions, fairytales and morality tales, as well as tie-ins to popular childrens media characters. More recently they have been getting into more popular culture and nostalgic media tie-ins, with some of their latest releases including adaptations of Jurassic Park and Back to the Future!

For their initial Star Trek offering they are going for character focused books, one featuring Captain Kirk, and one on Mr Spock.

Incredibuilds wooden starship model kits revealed

Insight Editions are adding two new Star Trek releases to their range of Incredibuilds book and model kits. Featured will be the USS Enterprise from TOS, and USS Enterprise-D from TNG, both rendered in laser-cut wood, and coming with a 32-page book detailing each ship written by Star Trek novelist Dayton Ward.

UPDATE: Dayton has now blogged about these releases, including a description of what he has done in the books:
For both Enterprise editions, I took a similar approach, so you’ll get a brief rundown of the ship and their place in Starfleet history, as well as a look at each filming model’s design and creation for their respective television series. Lots of pictures are jammed into both books, as well.
As for the models: The parts pop out of a sheet of wood, and snap together with ease, following the included instructions, which also have suggestions for further crafting projects using the models (some of which are pretty cool as you'll see below). StarTrek.com and Australian retailer Dicebox have released images of both kits, continue below to check them out.

We'll start with the Enterprise-D, which for something made out of flat bits of wood is a pleasingly solid and curvy:

Latest Star Trek novel covers and audiobook updates

A few book updates today, with news of the latest audiobooks and covers for forthcoming Discovery, Voyager, and Prometheus books.

We'll start with the first look at the cover for the third Discovery novel, James Swallow's Saru book, Fear Itself. A little oddly the cover has been revealed thanks only to listings of the audiobook on Amazon/Audible, which does mean this is the square format audiobook edition of the cover - The print version will most likely be the same sort of thing, but maybe slightly rearranged to crop it into the portrait shape.

Spock autobiography cover, new TNG cat previews, and other non-fiction updates

A few bits of Star Trek non-fiction books news today, including new previews from the TNG Cats book, and news of new titles in the works. But first, a new cover.

Due out in October is David Goodman's third in-universe Star Trek biography (following Kirk and Picard), The Autobiography of Mr Spock. IGN have revealed the cover, which follows the now familiar format of the series - I'm quite surprised they went for the Starfleet emblem over the IDIC.

Non-fiction round-up: Lost Scenes, biographies, obsession, posters, and cats

I've got an assortment of news on a very varied selection of Star Trek non-fiction books coming over the next few months, including new previews of the next Star Trek Cats and poster books, details of new in-universe biographies, and and update to Obsessed with Star Trek. But first...

Due out in August from Titan Books, is Star Trek: Lost Scenes, a new behind the scenes book by David Tilotta and Curt McAloney of StarTrekHistory.com, which presents their restoration of rare clips from the production of TOS in a new accessible format:
Fascinating compilation of previously unseen and fully restored stills from The Original Series, showing William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and other cast crew filming the iconic show.

Think you know everything about the Original Series? Think again. Star Trek: The Lost Scenes is packed with hundreds of never-before-seen color photos of the world's ultimate sci-fi series. Professionally restored images are used to chronicle the making of the series, reassemble deleted scenes, and showcase bloopers from the first pilot through the last episode. Whether you're a new Star Trek fan or a seasoned veteran, this book is a must-have.

StarTrek.com released the cover, and a whole load of preview pages - Alas at rather low resolution so we can't really take in what they're showing, but at least get a good idea of the format. They report the book will cover some fifty lost scenes, using photography and script excerpts. Other sections will cover optical effects, filming miniatures, makeup, exterior shooting locations, and bloopers. Over 700 photos will fill the 272 page book. It looks like quite the treat!

Voyager: Architects of Infinity cover, and other new Trek-novel covers

With a thin release schedule of Star Trek novels this year (due to a still pending license renewal), there aren't so many book cover reveals lately. So this should be exciting day! Simon and Schuster have now released the cover for the next book in Kirsten Beyer's Voyager relaunch series, Architects of Infinity. The cover features Voyager and a Vesta class ship (presumably the USS Vesta) both firing off phasers and torpedoes!

Book bits: Discovery novels and comics, scheduling, non-fiction, and more!

Lots of books bits today, including updates for Discovery novels and comics, scheduling updates, non-fiction books, and a journal. Continue below to check them all out:

First up, a little nugget regarding IDW's first Discovery comic: The series, written by Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson, with art by Tony Shasteen, is set to be the first of several miniseries based on the series; with this one filling in the backstory of T'Kuvma. Until now though it has simply been referred to as Star Trek: Discovery; annoyingly indistinct from the series as a whole. Well good news folks, the Amazon listing for the series omnibus book (due in May), now lists it with a title! The Light of Kahless.

IDW have also recently released a promo video for their Star Trek comics, which includes the first look at a comic-book rendition of the USS Shenzhou:

Star Trek Cats, and other quirky new books

Do you like cats? And Star Trek? Then this is the book you've been waiting for! Due out in February from Chronicle Books, is Star Trek Cats, a curious new take on TOS from illustrator Jenny Parks. Amazon recently added a listing, complete with cover and blurb:

Captain's log: We have entered a galaxy where beloved illustrator Jenny Parks has conjured an astonishingly vivid homage to the original Star Trek series with an unexpected twist: a cast of cats. Featuring a hilarious new take on iconic characters and scenes—from Kirk in the Captain's chair to Spock offering his Vulcan wisdom—this eye-opening adventure stays true to the tone of the classic TV show. Playful, loving, and from a strange new world, Star Trek Cats is the perfect gift for fans of, well, Star Trek and cats.
But that's not all, continue after the jump for a look at a couple more quirky new Trek books on the way.
