What is this crazy Ferengi TNG board game from the 90s?

In my never-ending search for all things Star Trek I sometimes come across something completely new to me, the odd curiosity, or indeed just plain odd things. Today I would like to present my latest discovery: Canada Games' Star The Trek Next Generation "action game", The Final Frontier(ad)- Why is this odd? Because it contains tobogganing Ferengi marbles!!

I mean, just look at these things! I'm not sure if these little guys are built around marbles, or ball bearings, or just a little wheel. But however they work, that's a whole bunch of Ferengi in zooming poses rolling around on their bellies!

The best Star Trek playing cards?

There are plenty of Star Trek playing cards out there, they're one of those things that are pretty easy to slap a picture of Captain Kirk on the back and think yourself an exciting merchandise maker. So it's a very welcome moment when a licensee does something more interesting with what could be a very ordinary product....

Forbidden Planet have just done that, with the launch of a new crossover set of playing cards that fully integrate Star Trek into the deck; each suit is based on a particular Star Trek series, with the set including TOS, TNG, DS9, and Voyager, each represented by key characters and their respective Starfleet deltas/combadges, or for DS9 the Bajoran insignia. To make things extra clear, each suit is a different colour too.

Voyager Fluxx game on the way

Looney Labs have revealed plans for a new Star Trek edition of their Fluxx card game. The game of ever changing rules has been released under many themed variants before, including TOS, TNG, and DS9 versions, so naturally up next is a Voyager version, with all the Delta Quadrant goodness that should entail. This latest edition is expected to arrive late July. Here's how they describe it:
Journey home from the Delta Quadrant aboard the Starship Voyager! The fourth Fluxx-style excursion into the Star Trek universe features Captain Janeway and her crew along with plenty of their enemies: The Kazon, Species 8472, and of course, the Borg. You will also find several Timeships, the Holographic Doctor’s mobile emitter, and Janeway from the Future. The usual ever-changing rules of Fluxx apply, with a few new twists like the Caretaker and Ancestor’s Eve.

DS9 joining the Star Trek Fluxx games range

Last year Looney Labs released Star Trek versions of their Fluxx card game, with seperate TOS and TNG games, plus an extra set of cards which allowed the two sets to be played together. I guess they must have done fairly well, as then have now announced a DS9 edition is in the works too, due for release in the second quarter of this year. Here's how they describe it:
Explore the farthest reaches of the universe in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Fluxx! Work alongside Benjamin Sisko, Quark, Jadzia Dax, Worf and all your other favorite space station personnel while you try to gather Gold-Pressed Latinum and study the Wormhole. But watch out for nasty Surprises and Creepers like the Founders and the Jem'Hadar.
They have also released preliminary artwork, which is awaiting final approval:

Star Trek Catan returns

Great news Star Trek board game fans, the English language edition of Star Trek Catan is getting a very welcome re-release! The Trekified version of the classic board game was first released in 2012, but in recent years has gone out of print and thus the secondary market for it has gone a bit wild!

Now Asmodee, the new owners of the Catan brand, are re-issuing it, due out in just a few days time, with updated box-art no less - The Enterprise now zooms towards us rather than the previous side-view of it's visit to a colony, and the side of the box has been tweaked to fit in with the latest Star Trek product branding.

New Wizkids game: Conflick in the Neutral Zone

Wizkids have announced a new Star Trek board-game, Conflick in the Neutral Zone - And yes that's the right spelling; a play on words, as the game involves flicking discs around to defeat your opponents:
Resource-rich planets have been found in the Neutral Zone and both the Federation and Klingon Empire are out to exploit them!

In this simple flicking game, players will flick discs representing the various ships found within the Star Trek universe. These ships are used to collect resources or attack other ships.

Collecting resources (energy and command points) is accomplished by bringing a collector ship within range of an energy or command point planet. To attack, you must use your attack ship to hit an opponent’s ship off the planet or board. Successfully attacking an opponent will award a command point.

But attacking isn’t always easy—players can add in asteroids in order to block shots and protect their ships.

Your fleet can be expanded during your turn by purchasing more ships, allowing you to increase the strength of your forces and ultimately claim the planets for yourself.

The game is over when a player reaches 10 command points, and that player is declared the winner.

Star Trek Fluxx revealed

Looney Labs have revealed their first Star Trek editions of their game Fluxx, so named because the cards drawn and played in the game keep the end goal forever in flux. Two Star Trek games are being released in August, one based on TOS, and the other on TNG, plus an expansion to facilitate both editions being played mixed together. Continue below to check them all out:

We'll start with the TNG edition (because I like the cover more!). Here's the box:

New Star Trek card games from Wizkids and Looney Labs

Wizkids and Lonney Labs have both announced new Star Trek card games on the way, continue below for all the details.

Wizkids' latest release with be a Ferengi themed Galactic Enterprises, designed by Christophe Boelinger. They are planning to release in June, and this is how they describe it:
In Star Trek: Galactic Enterprises, 3 to 8 players will buy and sell their wares, trying to monopolize one particular product in order to gain greater profit. However, once other Ferengi get those same items for sale, it becomes a matter of who’s the better negotiator. Do you work together to gain the same profit, or do you agree to cooperate, then sell at a lower price to steal all the profit for yourself? Be wary of special action cards that can mess with your business and remember the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition in order to gain the most return for your investments.

Latest Star Trek board games: Frontiers, Risk, Trivial Pursuit, and jigsaws

It's a good year for Star Trek loving board-gamers, with some innovative new games and Trek-ified classics all looking to occupy the table. Continue below to check out the latest.

New from Wizkids is Frontiers, a game designed by Andrew Parks, based on Vlaada Chvátil's Mage Knight. Here is how Wizkids describe the elaborate game:
A contested region of space accessible through a known wormhole has drawn the attention of powerful forces throughout the galaxy. Both the Federation and the Klingon Empire, who share a delicate alliance at this time, have recently built outposts in the region. But now news of grave troubles brewing in the region has prompted both the Klingons and the Federation to investigate immediately.

Command your ship, recruit new crew members, earn experience points, and use your skills to confront the challenges of the Star Trek Universe. Explore and face a variety of challenges on a randomly built Space Map using the Venture Tile System first introduced in the award-winning game, Mage Knight.

Star Trek: Frontiers is designed for 1 to 4 players with multiple competitive, cooperative and solo scenarios. Work together to defeat hostile ships or compete to explore and uncover hidden mysteries. Players will need to overcome obstacles to expand their knowledge and use their leadership as they adventure in order to be victorious in their exploration!

First tease of new Star Trek: Ascendancy game

At the recent New York Toy Fair Gale Force Nine finally had a preview of their forthcoming Star Trek board game, which will be titled Star Trek: Ascendancy. Board Game Geek shared the photo to the side, of a banner that was on display.

Gale Force Nine tell me they will be ready to share much more information some time in the next few weeks. For now we can get a good feel for the game already though, from this new artwork, and an interview Board Game Geek took at their own convention late last year. The game will be expandable, and feature a big map building system, and little model ships.

The starting pack appears to include the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans, with other Star Trek species/governments will be released as expansion packs - The Ferengi and Cardassians appear on the artwork.

You can hear a few more details in the interview video below:

Franklin Mint tridimensional chess set returning for the 50th anniversary

As I mentioned in my recent board game update, one of the many planned Star Trek games this year is a tridimensional chess set. This will be released by Wood Expressions, and it turns out they are actually resurrecting the Franklin Mint TOS tridimensional chess set released in the 1990s. I think this is one of the the most beautiful and well made items of Star Trek merchandise ever made, befitting of the iconic design, so having it return is no bad thing (especially given the crazy secondary market prices). Like the previous release, this will include gold and silver plated pieces, and instructions on play, as Wood Espressions outline in their description. Continue after the jump for more images.
The Star Trek Tridimensional chess set is bold, distinctive, eminently logical, and has everything you’ll need to start your intergalactic chess playing expedition. The 32 game pieces are precision cast and coated in sterling silver or 24 karat gold, with three main playing boards, and four moveable “attack boards”. It also comes complete with a specially designed collectible booklet containing the history of the game and the rules of play. It is a stunning showpiece, moving the Star Trek saga into a bold new dimension. This chess set, from the Franklin Mint, is being released in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek TV series. The release is also timed in conjunction with the anticipated film Star Trek Beyond, the 13th film in the 50 year Star Trek franchise, being released summer of 2016. Since its inception in 1964, Star Trek has captured the hearts and minds of fans eager for a brighter future. The series’ views and ideas have moved beyond the screen and inspired the world outside of Science Fiction. Since the debut of “Court Martial” fans have been fascinated with the Tri-dimensional chess set featured in the episode. There have been many pop culture references to it, including episodes of “The Big Bang Theory” and “Doctor Who”.

Star Trek Panic and other new board games

It looks like 2016 is going to be a good year for trekkie board game fans, with several new licensees announced, bringing a variety of new games.

USAopoly (who have previously brought us several different versions of Star Trek Monopoly games) are returning, with a Star Trek version of the game Panic, delivered in conjunction with Fireside Games. The TOS-based game will feature a model of the Enterprise at the center, which will need to be protected from enemy attacks while the ship attempts to go about its mission. This is expect to arrive in May. Here's how USAopoly describe it:
Star Trek™ Panic® boldly goes where no one has gone before as players join the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise on a voyage to defend the ship from enemy attacks and carry out five vital galactic missions.

This cooperative light strategy game introduces new, never before seen, Panic® game mechanics, including Mission Cards, which feature unique challenges based on the original Star Trek™ series, as well as Character Cards, so players can assume the roles of Star Trek™ icons like Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. Star Trek™ Panic® comes complete with a maneuverable U.S.S. Enterprise model ship, Shields, Damage and Destroyed Indicators, Mission Cards, Character Cards, Enterprise Cards, and more.

New big Borg Cube coming to Attack Wing, and previews of latest releases

A little over a year ago Wizkids released their first oversized models for the Star Trek: Attack Wing miniatures game, including a big Borg Cube model, and now they have plans for the Borg to return, this time with a Borg Cube that can launch its own Borg Sphere. ICv2 report, that June will see the release of the "Borg Cube with Sphere port", which will include two ships, Borg Cube 384, with the new Sphere launch port detailing, and Sphere 936, ready to launch from it.

The Borg Cube is different as far as the port goes, although the detailing looks otherwise quite similar to the previous release on the CG mock-up. The Sphere will be a new paint-job compared to previous releases, designed to match the finish of the Cube.

Meanwhile, monthly releases of Wizkids normal sized Attack Wing expansions continue as ever. Read on below for a look at this month's new ships.

The Xindi are coming to Attack Wing

Every month Wizkids release three new ships for their miniatures game Star Trek: Attack Wing, and now and then throw something extra in, like the oversized models of Deep Space 9 and a Borg Cube. This month sees their third big model, the Xindi superweapon, or Weapon Zero as they're calling it. This won't be quite as huge as the previous big models, at about ten centimetres across, it will however by the first ever model of this Star Trek equivalent of the Death Star.

UPDATE: StarTrek.com have now released images of the final product, as well as closer look at all the cards featured in the set. Here it is in the box, and with all the contents, you can read more about the cards on StarTrek.com.

Smaller Xindi ships are also on the way in the most recently announced waves of regular expansion packs, continue below for the details of all those, and previews of the most recent releases in the series.

Latest Attack Wing waves, and other updates from Wizkids

Two more waves in the ever-expanding Star Trek: Attack Wing miniatures game have been revealed, thanks to listings on Ikon Collectables. The twenty-third and twenty-fourth waves, each featuring three individual starship expansions, are due for release in February and March next year.

Wave twenty-three will include Federation Saber class USS Montgolfier, Klingon K't'inga class IKS Amar, and 22nd century Romulan Bird of Prey IRW Jazkal.

Wave twenty-four will follow with Assimilated Vessel 77139, aka the Raven, the D7 class IKS Klothos, and the Romulan D'deridex class warbird IRW Davoras.

While the Saber class and Raven are new to Attack Wing, the models have previously appeared in other Wizkids Star Trek games, and as non-retail prizes in previous Attack Wing organised play events. After the run of brand new models in many of the preceding waves, that is perhaps a little disappointing - Wave fifteen was the last to feature no new models!

Meanwhile the latest wave does feature a particularly pleasing new addition to the fleet. Continue after the jump to check out the official images of the just released wave seventeen. Plus news of a new game on the way from Wizkids.
