La La Land Records have announced the details of their latest Star Trek soundtrack release, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Collection, Volume 2, a follow up to their previous DS9 collection, which was released all the way back in 2013 (20th anniversary then, and 25th anniversary now)! Like the previous release, this is a four disc set, containing music from multiple episodes from across the series.
It will be available from next week, and will be a limited edition of 3000. The first 200 ("or so") orders will also get a copy signed by composer Dennis McCarthy. Continue below for the full track listing. But first, check out this glorious cover by Darren Dochterman:

La La Land have announced the details of their 50th Anniversary Star Trek soundtrack collection, which has turned out to be a bit of a curious collection of musical odds and ends spanning the franchise.
The set includes new variations of tracks from the previous and pretty comprehensive TOS and movie soundtrack releases, plus the first ever collection of TAS music, soundtracks from the video game Borg and Star Trek: The Experience, plus a varied collection of TNG scores, and a smattering of tracks representing DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise.
Here is the official summary of the collection's contents:

Here is the official summary of the collection's contents:
DISC ONE features cues from the original, classic STAR TREK TV series (most of which were released on our TOS BOX SET, but have been sourced from newly discovered elements), as well the oft-requested STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE track “Inner Workings,” (featuring the wind machine more prominently) and STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KAHN’s “End Titles,” (without the narration as heard on previous soundtrack releases.)Posting on the Film Score Monthly forums, producer Lukas Kendall made note of how some of the tracks were selected, and also revealed more soundtrack collections in the works for the less represented series in this set:
DISC TWO showcases the official world premiere release of music from STAR TREK: THE ANIMATED SERIES, the beloved 70’s Filmation TV series, as well as original STAR TREK-inspired compositions from Ron Jones, and STAR TREK BORG, a score by Dennis McCarthy from an interactive 1996 movie/computer game.
DISC THREE features previously unreleased scores from STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, including such episodes “Coming of Age,” “The Hunted,” “Tapestry” and more, as well as the series’ trailer music.
DISC FOUR contains more unreleased THE NEXT GENERATION, including “Deja Q,” “Elementary, Dear Data,” and others, as well as unreleased demo tracks from DEEP SPACE NINE, and VOYAGER, original score from the famed Las Vegas attraction, STAR TREK: THE EXPERIENCE, and still more!

New soundtracks now available, and more on the way
The two recently announced soundtrack releases are now on sale. Mondo's vinyl version of the complete Wrath of Khan soundtrack, one of the most beautiful Star Trek products ever released, has gone live. This is a limited edition, although Mondo haven't said of how many; I'd snap one up while you can if you want one. They also posted the original interior art, from Matt Taylor, on Twitter, so you can see it without the fold line:
Meanwhile La La Land's Star Trek: The Next Generation Soundtrack Collection, Volume Two, is also available, and also a limited edition, this time of three-thousand units.
There is news of even more Star Trek soundtrack releases on the way! Posting on the Film Score Monthly Forums, founder Lukas Kendall confirmed not just the expected Voyager soundtrack collection, but also a 50th anniversary release, to feature fan requested tracks from multiple series:

New TNG soundtrack collection, plus Wrath of Khan vinyl
La La Land Records have announced the long awaited second volume of their Star Trek: The Next Generation soundtrack collection. The new three-disc release follows a similar arrangement to the volume one release (from way back in 2011!), with a wide variety of episodes featured, divided up by composer. Disc one features the work of Dennis McCarthy (plus the opening titles music), disc two is dedicated to Jay Chattaway, and disc three is nominally others, but is actually mostly McCarthy music again, save for one episode (six tracks) by George Romanis, and the closing title music. Continue below for a full track listing, and news of another new soundtrack release.

New soundtracks coming
Just released is the new Enterprise soundtrack collection from La La Land Records. The four-disc set includes music from throughout the series (see my previous report for full details). If you make your way to La La Lands' listings you will also find excerpt from several of the tracks - It's worth visiting just to enjoy Archer's theme, and that lovely Star Trek themes medley from These Are the Voyages....
But wait, there's more! TrekCore report there are plans for at least three more Star Trek soundtrack releases, coming in 2015. That includes a second Enterprise collection, which is expected next winter.
Previously rumoured releases for this year are now anticipated in 2015 too: The second volume of TNG music (following volume one way back in 2011!), and a Voyager soundtrack collection.

New Enterprise soundtrack collection
La La Land Records have announced their latest Star Trek soundtrack release, a four-disc collection of music from Star Trek: Enterprise. The collection will include five hours of music from across the series, featuring the work of Dennis McCarthy, Kevin Kiner, Jay Chattaway, David Bell, Paul Baillargeon, Velton Ray Bunch, Mark McKenzie, John Frizzell and Brian Tyler.
Following the same format as the previous Deep Space Nine collection, there is a disc each focusing on the work of Dennis McCarthy and Jay Chattaway, followed by a bit-of-everyone disc, and the final disc giving more extended coverage to the music from a selection of prominent episodes (which amusingly has resulted in These Are the Voyages being included on the "Fan Favorites" disc).
Limited to three-thousand copies, the collection will go on sale next Tuesday, and the first two-hundred copies will include an autographed card signed by Dennis McCarthy, David Bell and John Frizzell. Here's the description, posted on the La La Land Facebook page:

La-La Land Records and CBS proudly present the original television soundtrack to STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE, starring Scott Bakula, John Billingsley and Jolene Blalock. This stunning 4-CD collection showcases the powerful work of the notably talented composers who kept this prequel STAR TREK series at warp speed for four exciting seasons. The music expertly runs the gambit from the bold and thrilling to the thoughtful and emotional – it’s essential science fiction music that touches the heart while it opens the mind. Disc One features the music of Dennis McCarthy, Disc Two showcases Jay Chattaway’s work, while Disc Three’s “Veterans and New Recruits” highlights a variety of composers as does Disc Four’s “Fan Favorites,” which includes music from such episodes as In A Mirror, Darkly, Parts I and II and “Regeneration” among others. Produced by Ford A. Thaxton, James Nelson, Mark Banning and Lukas Kendall and mastered by James Nelson, this special release of 3000 Units includes a 36-Page Booklet featuring in-depth notes by writer Jeff Bond, with new comments from McCarthy, Chattaway and others.Continue after the jump for the full track listing:

Complete Nemesis soundtrack, and other music news
Varèse Sarabande have announced they will be releasing the final soundtrack (from the prime-timeline films at least) in the complete Star Trek movie soundtrack project. Coming early in January will be Star Trek Nemesis: The Deluxe Edition. I'm particularly excited about this one, as Nemesis has some of my favourite themes in all of Star Trek music, plus this new edition includes Brent Spiner performing Blue Skies!
This will be a limited edition of five-thousand. Here's Varèse Sarabande's summary of what's in this release:
In other Star Trek music news, Star Trek Soundtracks list three forthcoming releases from La La Land Records. They suggest still to come this year (although maybe that has slipped by now), will be a follow up the 2011 TNG soundtrack collection, in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Volume 2. While in 2014 they are anticipating soundtrack collections for the music of Voyager and Enterprise as well.
This will be a limited edition of five-thousand. Here's Varèse Sarabande's summary of what's in this release:
Goldsmith’s complete score from Star Trek Nemesis is presented, along with a set of bonus tracks that includes source music, a set of alternate cues and mixes, plus a rare opportunity to listen in to the final moments of Jerry Goldsmith on the Star Trek scoring stage with his orchestra and director Stuart Baird. Here's the track listing too. Tracks in bold are new to this release, plus "A New Ending" is two minutes longer than the previous album release (the shorter version appears to be in the additional music section now):
DISC ONESo the only movie left without a complete soundtrack now is Into Darkness, which is also in the hands of Varèse Sarabande. I hope it comes soon! In the mean time there is a little Into Darkness music news I've yet to report. A little while ago (back in September in fact!), John Tenuto let me know that after a little delay from the CD and digital release in May, the promised vinyl release of the Into Darkness soundtrack has indeed become a reality. As far as I can tell this is the first Star Trek film soundtrack release on vinyl since The Final Frontier, all the way back in 1989!

Soundtrack update
I'm a bit behind on my coverage of Star Trek soundtracks since my last mention of them, back in August! Since then there have been two new releases, and one of those is the biggest most comprehensive release in all of Star Trek soundtrack history - The Star Trek: The Original Series Soundtrack Collection, which includes all the music from the entire original series, including pieces that weren't even used in the episodes! The set is split up by season, each with accompanying notes, plus a fourth booklet with further information about all the music. Here's what it all looks like:
You can see a full track listing, and listen to many samples, on La La Land's website. The set has been out since December, and is limited to 6000 copies. Just prior to release TrekCore ran two interviews, with producers Lukas Kendall and Neil S. Bulk. The team behind the set went to some effort finding the right recordings of each piece of music, to make sure they are the takes actually used on-screen. Kendall explained what is and isn't included on the set:
That leaves just two films remaining to get the full soundtrack treatment. Insurrection, and my favourite Trek soundtrack of them all, Nemesis. Kendall spoke about both of these in his TrekCore interview on the TOS set. On Insurrection:

Just prior to release TrekCore ran two interviews, with producers Lukas Kendall and Neil S. Bulk. The team behind the set went to some effort finding the right recordings of each piece of music, to make sure they are the takes actually used on-screen. Kendall explained what is and isn't included on the set:
We included every original recording that we had that was considered a master take. When they’re recording any piece of music they’ll do Take #1, Take #2, Take #3 and so on until they get it right. In rare cases they may use an earlier take because they could not improve on that performance. We made a point to include every recorded master take, or “intercut” combination thereof, that was considered by the production to be the definitive recording of that composition. There were instances at the beginning of Seasons 2 and 3 where they had a recording session where they did new performances of earlier compositions which were then expressly used for library purposes. We made a point to include all of those re-recordings of the earlier music, but it was very easily identifiable what was original or not. What those recordings include are some extra pieces of music that weren't used on screen at all, as Bulk explains:
The big bombshell was that not only was “City on the Edge of Forever” recorded in Stereo, but Fred Steiner composed music that was never used in Star Trek. Not only have we got the best episode with the best sound, he wrote stuff you’ve never heard! He wrote this whole piece of music where Captain Kirk steals the clothes, but I’m guessing the scene was recut or changed because it doesn’t match properly. There were so many instances where music was dropped from an episode.
What was really cool with Nichelle’s “Beyond Antares” from “The Conscience of the King” is that it was cut down in the episode. We have the full song on the set, on three tracks – harp, voice and a blank channel. We have it all, and when I was lining it up I was shocked!Kendall also explained how he hopes the set will be received:
I hope people will be very happy. I think it will be a lovely collectible, and I think that there will be a certain ‘binge’ attitude which I experienced personally as far as wanting to listen and devour all of the music. To finally—after so many decades after hearing the tracks behind sound effects and dialogue—to hear it un-obscured and listen to all the lovely details in the music, to have this experience for the first time will be a special moment. The other new recent release was the latest in the expanded Star Trek movie soundtrack collection; Dennis McCarthy's Generations. StarTrek.com detailed the contents of this October release:
Disc one includes the full film score, including music for a sequence dropped from the finished film, while disc two offers a remastered version of the 1994 GNP soundtrack album (along with its innovative sound effects library)And here's what it looked like:
That leaves just two films remaining to get the full soundtrack treatment. Insurrection, and my favourite Trek soundtrack of them all, Nemesis. Kendall spoke about both of these in his TrekCore interview on the TOS set. On Insurrection:
I have to be a little cheeky and neither confirm nor deny any such plans, because I have to be aware of GNP/Crescendo’s prerogative to either announce or not announce what they wish to.And on Nemesis, coming from Varèse Sarabande:
I know the producer there—Bob Townson—is devoted to Jerry Goldsmith’s music. I know he’s also an excellent producer, he’s certainly someone who’s done far more work in the field than I have and whose career in the field predates mine by several years. I would be very optimistic that he’s aware of the interest in the title. Whether he does it or not is not for me to say.In his interview Bulk also talked about TAS, although that sounds less promising:
The story is that that is lost. But, I’ve been doing this type of work for a while and sometimes things that are lost suddenly aren’t lost. I have no knowledge, I know nothing about an Animated Series project happening – but I’d love it, it’s very cool music. Both producers commented on the DS9 set coming from La La Land soon, at the time of the interviews it was expected to be out this January. Bulk outlined the set:
I think it’s a “Best Of” compilation. It’s a 4-Disc set, and I think they went through and cherry-picked from all the seasons. While Kendall elaborated:
I’m very happy with these releases, I consulted on them. The producer who has been most involved with that (and La-La Land’s Next Generation set) is Ford Thaxton. He knows the scores by Dennis McCarthy and Jay Chattaway much better than I do and I trust his judgment when it comes to selecting the episodes and cues to put on the album. With modern day Star Trek series, there’s a much larger quantity of music that was recorded because they did an original score for each and every episode. I tried with the Ron Jones box set to present every single note, but it became a very large set that was probably not cost effective, it was just something I personally wanted to do because I was passionate about Ron’s music. In the case of the newer Star Trek series and the composers who did many more episodes than Ron did, by necessity we have to excerpt their work. I trust Ford to make the best selections for the collections. On top of those we should also have an all new soundtrack for Star Trek Into Darkness to look forward to.
