Discovery season three home video extra feature details, plus behind the scenes round-up

Season three of Discovery(ad) is set for home video release in July, and CBS Home Entertainment have now revealed the full line-up of extra features. Continue below to check out the details of those, plus a round-up of the latest behind the scenes goodies shared by the series' crew and cast.

The home video release incudes a number of documentary featurettes, a gag reel, and deleted scenes, but alas no audio commentaries this time around. 

Among the behind the scenes content, the ones that jump out to me are The Voyage of Season 3, looking at how every element of the production adapted to the new future setting, and Kenneth Mitchell: To Boldly Go, dedicated to the actor now living with ALS and how the series built a new character around his wheelchair use.

With multiple Star Trek TV series currently in production, and the promise of a new movie, there's a fairly steady stream of news coming from the on-screen portion of Star Trek lately. Continue below for a round-up of the latest from Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Picard, the Section 31 show, and movies.

First up, CBS Home Entertainment have released cover art for the forthcoming home video release of Discovery season 3(ad). While the season is already available for pre-order, a little oddly it's not yet clear when those orders will be fulfilled, as a release date hasn't yet been revealed - UPDATE: CBS Home Entertainment's Facebook page says 20th of July (thanks Star Trek Pike on Twitter). Nor have details of the extra features. But this is what the case will look like at least, for bluray(ad) or DVD(ad) editions:

Lower Decks season one bluray and DVD on the way

Lower Decks season one is getting its home video releases this May, with bluray(ad) and DVD(ad) sets available, including a steelbook(ad) version of the bluray. Continue below for all the details of the extra features and all the different formats.

The two-disc set will of course include all ten episodes of the first season, along with a nice selection of behind the scenes special features, some two hours worth, exploring the production of the series - Very welcome given this hasn't been as much a focus of CBS's social media around the series compared to the live action series. 

These promise a look at the animation process, the design of the opening titles, music of the series, and discussion of various in-universe subjects. There's also an all out movie-style trailer for the movie-style episode Crisis Point: The Rise of Vindicta, and deleted scenes.

Picard home video details, and latest behind the scenes videos

CBS have announced the details of the home video release of Picard season one, which is due out in October on bluray and DVD. As expected the set includes the Short Treks prequel Children of Mars, as well as all the Picard episodes.

Here are the details of all the other extra features included:

Screen-Trek round-up: Picard and Short Treks home video releases, plus Lower Decks, Discovery and Picard production updates

While things are moving slowly in the world of TV production right now, there are still quite a few updates from all corners of the current on-screen Star Trek universe: Continue below for the latest from Lower Decks, Picard, and Discovery productions. But first, some home video updates:

First up, Amazon now have a listing up for the Picard season one bluray and DVD release. At the moment it's just using the basic poster art, and doesn't even have a date, let alone any details of extra features and the like. You can get pre-orders in already though, and the listing probably indicates it's just a few months away.

Meanwhile the latest home video release came just yesterday, with the US release of Short Treks, which includes all the Discovery and Strange New Worlds related shorts (leaving out the Picard prequel, which will presumably come on the Picard season set instead). Some international release dates for the collection have now been announced too: It will arrive in the UK on the 13th of July, and Australia on the 15th of July.

The collection comes with an assortment of behind the scenes featurettes (see my previous report for a full listing), and CBS Home Entertainment have been busy releasing excerpts from several of them over the last few days. Continue below to check them out:

Short Treks coming to Bluray and DVD

CBS have announced first dedicated home video release of Short Treks. Coming in June on Bluray and DVD, Star Trek Short Treks will collect all nine of the Discovery-connected Short Treks episodes to date - That includes the wide range first four episodes (Runaway, Calypso, The Brightest Star, and The Escape Artist), the more recent trio of Pike/Enterprise related tales (Q and A, The Trouble with Edward, and Ask Not), and the two animated episodes (The Girl Who Made the Stars, and Ephraim and Dot).

Only one Short Treks episode is missing from the collection, the Picard prequel Children of Mars, which one assumes will come on the eventual Picard home video releases instead. A couple of of the Disco Short Treks episodes were released on the Disco Season Two home video releases, but otherwise this will be the first time most of these have been available on disc.

At the moment only North American release has been confirmed, but this will surely be coming to the rest of the world too; the first time many of us will be able to watch most of these episodes, which have not been made available to stream outside North America.

The set will also include a bunch of extra features exploring the production of the shorts. Continue below for full details.

Discovery season 2 bluray and DVD details

CBS have announced details for the home video release of Discovery Season Two. The season will be coming to bluray and DVD in November, including the fourteen episodes of Discovery, plus two episodes of Short Treks, The Brightest Star and Runaway -  Those two of course tie-in strongly to events in the season, but for some reason they seem to have decided to not bother with the other two Short Trek in the first batch, Calypso and The Escape Artist; hopefully they will show up in other home media releases later...

In addition to the episodes, there will also be two hours of extra features, including featurettes, audio commentaries on four episodes (Brother, New Eden, Through the Valley of Shadows, and Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2), cast interviews, deleted scenes, and a gag reel.

Star Trek Discovery season one bluray steelbook and international releases

CBS have announced further details of the Discovery Season One home video releases, including international release dates. The have also revealed new steelbook packaging for the bluray release, which will be a retailer exclusive in certain markets, including Best Buy in the US, and Zavvi in the UK. Discovery season one home video releases

If you've been holding out for Discovery on disc, or just want a physical copy to add to your library, good news; it's coming soon. CBS Home Entertainment have announced season one of Discovery will be coming to bluray and DVD on the 13th of November (in North America at least). The boxset will include some two hours of extra features, including deleted and extended scenes, and a bunch of behind the scenes coverage. The covers for both releases reuse one of the early posters for the series:

USS Franklin model coming as Star Trek Beyond home video bonus

Not wasting any time, the home video pre-orders are going live for Star Trek Beyond. As ever many retailers will have exclusive offers with different covers and extra goodies. And top of the line once more appears to be Amazon, who are offering a model of the USS Franklin (looks like a QMx job to me, same base as their forthcoming Mini Masters range).

Details are still early and I imagine the covers and details will change before release for most of what is below (such as that weird pentagram on the Franklin's base, or the blue nacelle caps), but so far listings suggest the US USS Franklin release will come with the 4K Ultra HD release of the film (which includes bluray and 3D bluray discs too), while the UK counterpart will come with the bluray. Current artwork for both uses the dominant poster in each market:

Latest nuTrek, TOS, and TNG home video releases

CBS and Paramount make sure to regularly reissue all the Star Trek titles on various home video formats so we can always get a-hold of them, and in this 50th anniversary year I'm sure we can expect even more reissues than normal! The latest announcements give us the nuTrek movies in new formats, and new box-sets for TOS and TNG TV series on bluray and DVD. Continue below for the details.

Paramount have now officially announced and revealed the covers for the first ever Star Trek 4K Ultra HD titles, which as was previously reported, will be the first two nuTrek movies, Star Trek, and Star Trek Into Darkness. Both will be arriving in June, in three disc packs which will contain the new 4K Ultra HD version of the films, plus a bluray movie disc, and special features bluray disc, with each.

Star Trek movies reissued on bluray and DVD

All the prime-timeline movies are returning to bluray and DVD, with bright new artwork. Due out in February the films will be split between TOS and TNG collections. Aside from the artwork, and being in thinner packaging than before, there is no indication of there being any other updates to these releases - So still no bluray edition of the director's cut of The Motion Picture, or any additional bonus material. In fact both sets omit the extra bonus material discs included in the 2009 TOS and TNG sets! But at least they look nice!

TOS DVD boxset reboxed

There's a new release of TOS on DVD on the way, a complete series boxset, with a snazzy new cover design. As StarTrek.com report, the DVDs will feature the remastered versions of all the episodes, plus all the extra features from the most recent previous DVD releases.

This new boxset will be out in November.

Latest Star Trek DVD and bluray releases

There are several new Star Trek home video releases out now or coming soon. Continue below for details on them all.

The mot genuinely "new" release is compilation of TOS episodes on DVD, Captain Kirk's Boldest Missions, which is due out next month. StarTrek.com have confirmed the eight episodes which will be included on this two-disc release, which will be: The Corbomite Maneuver, The Conscience of the King, Balance of Terror, Space Seed, The City on the Edge of Forever, Mirror, Mirror, The Doomsday Machine, and Return to Tomorrow.

There will also be several extra features: An introduction by William Shatner and Joan Collins (presumable just for City on the Edge of Forever), and featuretters: What Makes a Good Captain, The Importance of the Captain's Log, and Captain Kirk's Legacy. All of these were included on the Fan Collective: Captain's Log from way back in 2001!

Meanwhile in the UK, May will see the release of Star Trek: Enterprise - The Full Journey, the complete series boxset on bluray. This release uses the same style of packaging as the other European full series sets, but of course Enterprise wasn't available in bluray when those sets were first released a few years ago, so it's catching up now. While this is a UK release, the discs should be region free, so if you want the full series in one box it's an option wherever you are in the world, if you can get hold of it.

Captain Kirk's Boldest Missions

Coming in March will be a new TOS compilation DVD set, Captain Kirk's Boldest Missions, featuring eight, bold missions... So far only three episodes to be included in the two-disc set have been revealed, in the official description, posted by TV Shows on DVD, who also posted the cover concept (not final) pictured.

2-disc set at a great value price: 8 episodes from the science fiction classic, Star Trek: The Original Series, featuring the most thrilling adventures of Captain Kirk (William Shatner)! Captain James Tiberius Kirk steps squarely into the spotlight in this thrilling Star Trek collection that features his greatest interstellar adventures. And the commander of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise finds a galaxy full of intriguing missions, as he and his crew are destined to go "where no man has gone before."

From an encounter with the mysterious Balok in "The Corbomite Maneuver," and attempting to rescue survivors from a planet-killing machine from another galaxy in "The Doomsday Machine," to the critically acclaimed, Hugo Award-winning "The City on the Edge of Forever," this collection of eight thrill-packed, heart-pounding adventures from the original Star Trek series will have you joining Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew as they soar off on exciting quests and unforgettable encounters.

While this is obviously aimed at the more casual Trekkie (not wanting to take on whole seasons) it might be worth keeping an eye out for further details of this when they are released, as similar compilations before have included new extra features; last year's TOS: Origins set had new introductions, and the older Fan Collective releases came with various featurettes and commentaries.

New look TOS DVDs

If you're tired of all this new-fangled high definition bluray stuff, then CBS should brighten your day, as this month hey are reissuing Star Trek: The Original Series on DVD, in snazzy new packaging. TV Shows on DVD revealed the artwork for all three seasons of the remastered series:

nuTrek double-pack home video packaging

Along side the release of Star Trek Into Darkness on bluray and DVD at least some markets will be able to get a double pack containing the first nuTrek movie and Into Darkness. Amazon in the UK and Italy have posted the first drafts of covers for these. Neither look finished to me, but the UK version (top) seems more likely to be than the very basic Italian version:

These are currently being offered on bluray in the UK, Spain, and Italy, or on DVD in the UK and Italy.

More covers for Into Darkness home video releases

Paramount have released more cover art for the various home video releases of Star Trek Into Darkness around the world. Here are the trio of new covers for the US 3D bluray, bluray, and DVD releases, which have used posters and promo photos in new combinations, or in the case of the 3D release, give us a new image of the Enterprise crashing towards Earth: Coming Soon and Play.com have posted images of the new covers. Curiously, if Play's listings are right the Region B release will use the same artwork (from the Region A DVD) for both the DVD and bluray versions.

Play.com also posted a look at the combi-pack, containing the 3D bluray steelbook and a Hot Wheels USS Vegeance. There are apparently four-thousand of this limited edition release:

Target in the US are getting an exclusive cover, using the character posts in a delta pattern mimicking the first film's poster style:

A Dutch site, Saturn, also list a unique steelbook cover, a pleasingly stark high contrast design:

The UK is also getting several steelbook covers, bluray.com list at least three different designs. I'd expect each might be a retailer exclusive. See those after the jump:

New covers from across the Trekverse

Several new covers for a variety of forthcoming releases have been revealed. StarTrek.com posted the cover for The Crimson Shadow, Una McCormack's Cardassian focused TNG novel, and second book in The Fall series, due out in October:

The back cover has some unusual details: One of the images appears to be a real world shot of the cast. While the image that forms the background, at a glance the Enterprise, is not the nuTrek Enterprise - It is in fact Gabriel Koerner's reimagined Enterprise design, first seen in Ships of the Line 2007, and frequently mistaken for the nuEnterprise ever since!

Finally, StarTrek.com also released artwork for a series of new TOS DVD season box sets, which will apparently be coming soon as a Best Buy exclusives in August:
