The Mirror War #2 comic preview, covers, and artwork

The latest issue in IDW's The Mirror War(ad) year-long comic event is available now; with issue two(ad) of the main series within the event released last week. Continue below to check out lots of covers, a five-page preview, and behind the scenes artwork.

While this story is focused mostly on TNG characters, the TNG title was dropped off before the series launched, and this issue might point to why, as it brings in Regent Worf from DS9 along with several other DS9 characters, not to mention more TNG cameos, and event a little love for Enterprise!

The book and series is written by Scott and David Tipton, with art by Gavin Smith, and colour from Charlie Kirchoff. Like the previous issue it's available in no less than four different covers! The A cover(ad) is painted by J.K. Woodward, and prominently features Worf, framed by several of the TNG crew. The B cover(ad) is by Amanda Madriaga and features Sisko and Ro. There's also a rarer retail incentive cover(ad) by Mark Alvarado and also features Ro. And on top of that there's also a really cool Worf cover by Zach Howard with colour by Nelson Dániel, which is an online exclusive - I'm not sure exclusive to where though; the similar issue-one cover was associated with a convention, so maybe we can expect similar.

The Mirror War #1 comic preview, covers, and artwork

Out this week is issue one(ad) of IDW's new mirror universe comic event series The Mirror War(ad) - Although if you're following the series it will feel more like the second issue, as it was preceded by an issue zero(ad). Building on IDW's three previous TNG mirror universe miniseries(ad), this eight issue series, with numerous one-shot side stories also promised, will expand on the story of the remnant of the Terran Empire still active in the 24th century, and the grand ambition of mirror-Picard and crew. The core series in the event is written by Scott and David Tipton, with art by Gavin Smith, coloured by Charlie Kirchoff.

This first issue is offered in no less than four covers! The A cover(ad) featuring mirror-Picard and a montage of other characters and ships, is by J.K. Woodward; who created the look of the IDW TNG-mirror universe crew in their first miniseries, and has been involved in some capacity with all the subsequent outings. The B cover(ad) featuring echoes of Barclay, is by Amanda Madriga. There's then a rarer retail incentive cover(ad) by Mark Alvarado, featuring a shattered vision of Data. Finally there's the most elusive cover of all an online exclusive convention cover(ad) offered as part of the New York Comic Con last weekend, which features Picard, as illustrated by Zach Howard and Nelson Daniel.

Continue below to check out all those covers, a five-page preview, and artwork from the book. Look out for cool stuff including the Enterprise-D's captain's yacht in action, and black versions of the Insurrection-style dress uniforms!

Star Trek Explorer fiction authors, story details, and features revealed, plus extra cover variant

The new Star Trek Explorer magazine is just a month away from launch, and Titan Publishing and the magazine's creators have revealed some new details of what to expect, including most tantalisingly some details of the four new short stories that the first issue will offer. Continue below for information on those and other features in the magazine, plus a new cover variant.

While the Star Trek Magazine of old has previously offered some Star Trek Online based fiction (an omnibus of which(ad) is coming soon), this will be the first time a broader fiction offering will be coming to the official Star Trek magazine. The new quarterly Star Trek Explorer will feature two new short stories each issue, alongside two more delivered as a digital supplement to subscribers.

Titan Publishing have announced the four writers for the first issue, and three of them appeared in a virtual panel at the New York Comic Con this past weekend, and gave a few more details. Notably this first batch of stories are all based around Q, but maybe not in the most expected settings. It's not clear which of these four are in the print magazine, and which are digital, but they are:

One-week Mego Star Trek action figure exclusives from Topps. plus the latest Mego TOS, TNG, and 14 inch releases

Retro action figure makers Mego recently announced a new partnership with Topps to release exclusive action figures on a weekly basis, and on just the second week of this initiative, there are two new Mego Star Trek figures on offer, for one week only. Continue below to check them out, plus their latest TOS and TNG character regular releases, and their new larger sized 14 inch figures.

The Topps arrangement is in effect a crowdfunding pre-order offer, where new characters are offered for a one-week pre-order period, and so long as a minimum order threshold is met, they go into production, and arrive about 90-100 business days later - So these first two characters should turn up in January.

On offer now we have a The Motion Picture version of Spock:

This is the first Motion Picture release in the new era of Mego (which relaunched a couple of years ago), but of course Mego has done a lot of TMP toys(ad) in the past, being the main toy company for the film at release. That included Spock in a twelve inch action figure assortment(ad), and curiously this new figure appears to be modelled after that figure as much as the film, with the prominent grey V neck shared between the two toys, but I don't think Spock on-screen!

Star Trek Magazine is reborn, as Star Trek Explorer

Titan Magazine's long-running Star Trek Magazine is getting a relaunch, with this October bringing us issue #1 of the new Star Trek Explorer. Check out the details of that first issue, and other Titan Publishing Star Trek releases, below:

Star Trek Explorer: The Official Magazine(ad)  is set to feature interviews, behind the scenes coverage, and new fiction content. Here's the blurb for the first issue:

STAR TREK EXPLORER THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE LAUNCHES A NEW ERA OF BELOVED SHOW! Featuring exclusive interviews with the cast and crew of Star Trek series as well as behind-the-scenes content you won't find anywhere else! This new magazine will also feature Star Trek exclusive fiction! Plus much more!

The covers for the first issue suggest an emphasis on interviews with the Discovery cast and crew for this issue, alongside a Kirk-focused "mini-magazine", a "Star Trek 101" explainer feature, and the promised "exclusive fiction". The previous Star Trek Magazine has before featured Star Trek Online based short stories, and excerpts form Star Trek novels; will this new format continue those sort of things, or maybe offer so some completely new short stories from different corners of the Trekverse? The only clue is that Disco-era Captain Pike is used to illustrate the new fiction tag on the cover (alongside "all-new magazine" and "new features" mind you).

The book will be offered in two covers, either the regular edition(ad) featuring Burnham in an EV suit, of the Previews exclusive edition(ad) using Tim Anderson's TOS art from the 50 Artists 50 Years collection(ad).

IDW mirror universe comic updates

IDW and their artists have announced new mirror universe comic details for both the new Mirror War series starting later this year, and other releases. Continue below for the latest.

Following the announcement of the TNG mega-series The Mirror War back in May IDW have been a bit quiet on actual release dates for the series, but the new solicitations for October releases have now pinned issue #1 down to a release that month. There's also been an update in the creative team, with Gavin Smith now filling art duties on the series. As previously announced, Scott and David Tipton will be writing.

The series also seems to have been rebranded slightly, referred to simply as Star Trek: The Mirror War, rather than being under the TNG banner specifically. Here's the blurb for Star Trek: The Mirror War #1:

Return to the Mirror Universe of The Next Generation with this brand-new series from writers David & Scott Tipton, where familiar faces and exciting new surprises await around every corner!

To conquer the Mirror Universe, Captain Picard must first seize control of the ship-building planet of Faundori! The only problem? Faundori is inside Klingon-Cardassian Alliance territory…

The book will be offered in three different covers, with the main one painted by J.K Woodward. IDW have released previews of this with the full cover treatment and the art only:

Novel news: New Coda cover and blurb, and Shadows Have Offended excerpts

The next cover for the Coda trilogy has been revealed, along with a new blurb for the series. Continue below to check out those updates, plus excerpts from the recently released TNG novel Shadows Have Offended.

This autumn the Coda trilogy(ad) will bring together the heroes of the Star Trek novel continuity from the last couple of decades, in a "Temporal Apocalypse", which is presumably their final adventure, as their timeline has been shunted into an alternate timeline by the events of Picard painting a very different future for the prime timeline. The second book in that trilogy is James Swallow's The Ashes of Tomorrow(ad), and the cover has now been revealed for that, which has a bit of a DS9 focus, with the new Starfleet-built replacement Deep Space 9, and Captain Dax's slipstream-ship the USS Aventine.
