New back-cover previews for the 2022 Star Trek calendars

Star Trek calendar publisher Universe Publishing has release the back cover images for their 2022 range. Next year there will be six different Star Trek calendars to choose from, and now we can get a little look inside each of them care of the back cover previews. Continue below to check them out:

The long-running Ships of the Line(ad) series is the only calendar which gets new artwork each year, lovely wide-format starship art - Essentially a starship art magazine with a small calendar overlay.

This year marks the first Star Trek Online art to feature in the series, alongside lots of TOS and TNG ships, and a little love for DS9 too. Several images feature new starship designs, and there's a new cutaway diagram too. Check out the thumbnails on the back cover:

All the calendar series that been offered for 2021 are set to continue next year, joined by the surprise resurrection of a classic series. Continue below to check out the range.

First up, the eternal highlight of the calendar range, Ships of the Line(ad); the starship art calendar, which is presented in landscape format with a pretty minimal actual calendar.

Got a few Star Trek non-fiction book updates today, including the new cover for the Wisdom of Picard book, autobiography book updates, and new previews from the Ships of the Line calendar. Continue below to check out all that. But first....

Due out in September from Titan Books is The Art of Star Trek Discovery, written by Paula Block and Terry Erdmann. Here's a reminder of the blurb:

2020 Star Trek calendar line-up revealed

The Star Trek calendar ranges for 2020 from both US publisher Universe Publishing and Germany Heye have been announced, offering a selection of eight different designs to choose from. Continue below to check them out.

Perhaps this year's most unique calendar is 2020 16 Month Engagement Calendar. This format has seen a fresh new look every year for several years now, and this year they have got quite creative with a fully bilingual Klingon calendar! As you can see from the preview pages below, not only have they translated absolutely everything, but they've also gone to town with Klingon design inspired by the unique triangular based monitor designs often seen used by Klingons. The description also suggests this will encompass Klingons from all the live action TV series.

For the first time in Klingon and English, Star Trek 16-Month Klingon Engagement Calendar for 2020 features full-color photos from every live action Star Trek television show.

With text in both Klingon and English, and featuring more than 40 fan-favorite images from across the franchise's six live action television shows, this 16-month engagement-style calendar will captivate casual fans and die-hard Trekkers alike.

2019 Star Trek calendar previews

Universe Publishing have released updated previews and covers of the 2019 Star Trek calendar range, giving us a great look at all six of the calendars on offer for next year, which include regular calendars for Ships of the Line, Discovery, and TOS series, plus a TOS art poster calendar, and diary and daily formats. Continue below to check them all out.

2019's Ships of the Line calendar looks to be packed full of great images, with one of the most exciting thankfully offered as a preview image: John Eaves and Scott Schneider's U.S.S. Enterprise - Star Trek: Discovery, which gives us great look at the new look USS Enterprise, alongside the USS Discovery.

The back cover reveals the rest of the images in the calendar, with a pretty diverse offering:

2019 Star Trek calendar range revealed

Universe Publishing have revealed their line-up of Star Trek calendars for 2019, which features six different designs, continuing every format they offered for this year. Continue below to check out what is on offer.

Now one should note off the bat, that these are very early listings, and the artwork for at least some of them will certainly change before their release later in the year.

That could not be more true than for the Ships of the Line calendar. The latest in the long-running series, this calendar will feature loads of brand-new starship artwork, in panoramic format - For now though the interior previews are re-using images from this year's edition to illustrate the style. The cover image currently in use, featuring a visit from the Enterprise-E to the new Deep Space 9, doesn't seem familiar to me though, but lacking a spacey background I suspect it is also a stand-in.

New 2017 Star Trek calendar previews

New covers and preview pages from several of the 2017 Star Trek calendars have been released. Continue below to check out the art, Star Trek Beyond, and TOS calendars.

Due out in August from Universe Publishing, the 50 Artists, 50 Years calendar features a selection of images from the touring 50th anniversary art exhibition of the same name. The calendar is formatted to allow the artwork to be easily removed from calendar once you're done using its practical functions, allowing each month's image to be used as a poster.

The newly revealed backcover gives us the full contents of the calendar, including several pieces from the exhibition which have not previously been previewed. I love the creepy First Contact image!

Ships of the Line 2017 covers, and other calendar updates

It's that time of year where with great excitement we get to see what await us in next year's Ships of the Line calendar! Continue below for a look at all the images in this calendar, and updates from the other 2017 calendars.

2017 Star Trek calendars revealed

You will have no shortage of Star Trek calendars to choose from for 2017, with no less than six designs from US publisher Universe Publishing alone (there are normally also a couple of UK designs, and sometimes others too). Amazon have posted the first details of the range, with what I am sure is not final art, but probably indicative of the formats once all the artwork is finalised, which we should start to see later in the year.

The most notable of the six is an entirely new Star Trek calendar for 2017, the Poster Calendar, which, despite only have twelve pages,  is intriguingly titled 50 Artists. 50 Years. I am very curious about that title; if it is just twelve images in this publication, might this be just the calendar version of a larger 50 Artists. 50 Years. project? Or maybe the start of a multi-year series of calendars? Hopefully more details about this won't take too long to arise. Here's the official description, which includes some of the notable contributing artists:
STAR TREK™ 50 Artists. 50 Years. 2017 Poster Calendar showcases the work of artists from around the globe who created original pieces to celebrate Star Trek's 50th anniversary. With easily detached perforations above and beneath the image, each calendar page becomes an 11x14-inch easy-to-frame poster perfect for display in a standard gallery frame.

Star Trek™: 50 Artists. 50 Years. 2017 features work by Leonard Nimoy, Tom Whalen, Nick Walker, Johnson Tsang, Derek Charm, Susan Beatrice, and others.

Ships of the Line and other 2016 calendar updates

Universe Publishing have released updated covered and new preview images for some of their 2016 Star Trek calendars. The biggest reveals come from Ships of the Line, with new front and back covers revealing some (but not all) of the competition winning designs that will feature in next year's calendar:

If you can't quite make out what you're seeing on the back there, I believe we have:
  • The Insignia class, one of my favourite fan designs (inspired, I believe, by one of the proposals for a next generation starship in the TNG Technical Manual), which I'm delighted to see in an official publication.
  • What appears to be a meeting of the TV era TOS Enterprise and the Enterprise-C.
  • An Argo-type shuttle on the way to the Enterprise-E.
  • The Enterprise-D, with the big shuttlebay open (same image as the cover).
  • A refit Constitution class ship next to a spacedock, possibly with a pre-refit inside said dock (I can't quite make it out).
  • Another pre-refit Enterprise in spacedock, this time seen from within the dock, and with a classic shuttle flying by.
  • A new TOS-era ship, with a similar configuration to the USS Kelvin.
A preview image form inside the calendar has also been released, which means there are four (maybe five if there's a centerfold) images yet to be revealed! Continue after the jump to check out a USS Defiant picture from the calendar, and updates from other 2016 Star Trek calendars:

Ships of the Line poster collection on the way!

I hope you've got a lot of wall space starship fans, because Universe Publishing have got a real treat on the way! Coming in October is Star Trek: Ships of the Line Posters, a collection of twenty-four poster prints of artwork from the Ships of the Line calendar series. Here is the cover and blurb:

Easily framed, high-quality, collectible prints by fan-favorite artists depict iconic scenes and the world-famous spacecraft, in celebration of Star Trek’s landmark 50th anniversary in 2016.

Conceptual artists and graphic designers breathe incredible life into the alien worlds, serene galactic vistas, famous missions, and harrowing battles from Star Trek history in twenty-four stunning Ships of the Line posters. Formerly included in the long-running Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendar and used as novel covers, none of these images has ever been available in poster form.

This boxed collection of easily framed posters gives fans an all-new, accessible way to display artwork from their favorite sci-fi franchise. Vividly reproduced on high-quality stock and including the artist’s name and the title image, each print makes an elegant addition to any fan’s space. Together, it’s a serious collection of eye-popping official Star Trek artwork.
There are a few hints about what will be included, but not enough to narrow down to any definite images. Amazon list the following as contributing artists: Doug Drexler, John Eaves, Koji Kuramura, and DM Phoenix. Amazon also have a short secondary blurb under the author section of their listing, which outlines some of the subjects that will be included:
Each version of the U.S.S. Enterprise is included, from Star Trek: The Original Series, the films, and Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as Deep Space 9, the U.S.S. Voyager, and other familiar vessels, such as Klingon birds-of-prey and a Borg Cube.

2016 Star Trek calendar range revealed!

Forget 2015, Star Trek has always got eyes on the future; so you'll be glad to know Universe Publishing has revealed (via Amazon listings) its 2016 Star Trek calendar range already! All four of the regular calendars from the past few years will be continuing. But joining them this year will be a fifth format! Ships of the Line is being expanded into a sixteen month calendar poster featuring the ship-tastic cover artwork from the first Ships of the Line book.

Celebrate being a Trekker in a big way with the Star Trek 2015-2016 Calendar Poster.

Available for the first time, this 21 x 15" single-sheet poster of the most iconic Federation ships is complemented by a 16-month calendar, and features art by fan-favorite Doug Drexler.

All five designs will be available form August. Continue after the jump to check out the rest. But do bare in mind these are early listings and the designs will almost certainly change before publication, which I will of course report on when they updated.

Case in point, Ships of the Line 2016 as pictured here reuses the USS Onimaru from the 2014 calendar as the cover, and sample pictures supplied are from the 2014 and 2013 calendars. Plus of course we're expecting this year's range of images to come from winners of the Ships of the Line competition, which hopefully will have supplied some creative new takes on starship art.

Ships of the Line and other 2015 calendars revealed

There are four Star Trek calendars announced for 2015 so far, and while there do not appear to be extra calendars for the UK and German markets this year, Universe Publishing will be continuing with all four of their designs: Ships of the Line, TOS, a daily calendar, and an engagement calendar. Amazon have now updated their listings for these four, revealing the covers, and (one of the most exciting Star Trek moments of each year) what ships we get to enjoy in Ships of the Line. So, here are the covers for Ships of the Line 2015:

You might recognise a couple of the images from book covers, and indeed 2015 will be a great year for Star Trek books fans, with the first ever appearances in Ships of the Line of both the USS Titan and Starbase Vanguard. Here's the run down:
  • The cover is "Vanguard Down", by Doug Drexler, featuring the USS Enterprise and Starbase 47 under attack from the Tholians. This image comes from the cover of the final Vanguard novel, Storming Heaven.
  • January is "Explorers", by Jenny DeSalle and Ali Ries, featuring the refit Enterprise NX-01.
  • February is "Xindi Reptilian", also by DeSalle and Ries, with the refit NX-01 again, but this time in the background behind two Xindi Reptilian ships.
  • John Eaves (whose pictures are normally painted) will be giving us a cool image of the Enteprise-E after a saucer separation. Apart from concept art, I think this might be the first time we've seen this (unless you count the toy version made by Romando).
  • Douglas Graves will be giving us a new view of the Klingon D4 class.
  • Gabriel Koerner has produced an encounter between a Constitution class and what looks like a variation of AMT's "Interplanetary U.F.O. Mystery Ship", a model kit ship designed by Matt Jefferies.
  • Tobias Richter has brought together his beautiful models of the USS Titan and Vanguard, or, considering the station is over a planet, another Watchtower class station.
  • Doug Drexler gives us a wider view of the construction site for the new Deep Space 9, as originally featured on the cover of Raise the Dawn.
  • D.M Phoenix has what looks like a fleet of Sabre class ships being attacked by a moon!
  • From Alain Rivard we have an encounter between movie era Constitution and Miranda class ships, not a Wrath of Khan scene remake though, as there's a shuttle flying about.
  • After a few years waiting for it, we finally get to see Andrew Probert's Wolf 359 clean-up operation painting.
  • Alain Rivard's second image takes us back to the original DS9, with a lot of Klingons visiting.
  • It looks like a potential Romulan War scene from Dan Uyeno, who has a fleet of Daedalus class ships under attack by a Romulan bird of prey.
  • And finally Michael Wiley has an encounter between the original USS Enterprise and the NX-01 refit.
Amazon also posted preview pages, giving us a good look at two of the images:

2015 Star Trek calendars

Amazon has added listings for Universe Publishing's range of Star Trek calendars for 2015. Next year will see the continuation of the four calendars Universe has offered since it took over the calendar range a couple of years ago: Ships of the Line, TOS, the daily, and engagement calendars. All four will be ready for you to plan 2015 from August this year.

Amazon have covers up for each of them, but this early in the year I would suspect they are not the final designs. Certainly not for Ships of the Line, which is using one of the interior images from this year's calendar at the moment:

Amazon's listing also has a back-cover and samples pages, but they are just examples from this year's edition. Doug Drexler has a real sample though, having recently posted a photo of Andrew Probert with his painting featuring the Wolf 359 clean-up (which he started work on way back in 2011!):

UPDATE: Andrew Probert has also posted on his own Facebook page this section of the painting, giving us a nice look at his tug design:

New starships calendar covers, and 2014 calendar round up

There are at least eight 2014 Star Trek calendars available to choose form around the world, most are already available, but there's one still to come, which is Danilo's starships calendar for the UK market. Last year their ships calendar focused exclusively on nuTrek, with a mixture of stills from the first film, and concept art. For 2014 they've broadened the range of ships on display, with stills, promo shots, and concept art from across the franchise. Here are the covers, for the calendar which is out in a week or so:

Last year Danilo also released a TOS calendar, but this year they've switched tracks, and gone for an Into Darkness design. Here are the covers for that calendar, which was released a few weeks ago:

Continue after the jump for a run-down of all the other 2014 calendars available:

Publishing bits: Next Voyager novel, Enterprise relaunch uniforms, more calendars, and French comics

A variety of bits and pieces from all corners of the Star Trek publishing world for you: First up, Kirsten Beyer's next Voyager novel appears to have a title and publication slot. Simon and Schuster now list a Voyager book called Protectors, which is expected in late January, making it nominally the February book, and the first book of the 2014 publishing schedule. Oddly this book is not appearing very widely on the Simon and Schuster site, it only comes up under the author page, not if you just look for Star Trek, or even specifically Voyager novels. I only became aware of thanks to TrekBBS user Madzilla pointing it out.

Much closer to the present, next month's book, the first in the new Enterprise relaunch, Rise of the Federation: A Choice of Futures, is starting to appear right now. The author, Christopher L. Bennett, posted a sketch of his uniform design for the series on his website. The design combines elements from uniforms before and after the early Federation setting of the novel, and also notes a nice explanation of the different insignias we saw in TOS.

In a completely different area of publishing, there's potentially worrying news for UK Star Trek calendar fans. Last year Danilo published two Star Trek calendars in the UK market, a TOS design, and a nuTrek ships collection. As a result the US calendars, including Ships of the Line, from Universe Publishing, were not distributed in the UK. We were looking safe this year, but now two 2014 calendars from Danilo have appeared, offering either a "movie" or "ships" calendar. At the moment both Universe and Danilo's calendars have been listed by Amazon in the US and the UK, but if it's like last year only each country's calendars will only be distributed locally, so you'll have to rely on secondary sellers if you'd prefer designs from the opposite side of the ocean (which ever side you're on).

There is also going to be a German Star Trek calendar this year, like last year it is being published by Panini. Listings for this initially suggested a May release, but that has now been pushed back to July.

If you are a Ships of the Line fan, be sure to check out Mark Rademaker's latest blog post, he has written about how he has come to design an almost real-world warp ring-ship for NASA, which is also his contribution to the 2014 calendar. He's also posted lots of artwork, like the following image, check out his blog for much more,

Finally good news Star Trek comic fans in France, a couple of days ago Countdown to Darkness was released in French, on Kindle. There doesn't appear to be a physical version at the moment. Unusually for foreign language releases, IDW itself is listed as the publisher, rather than selling on the rights to a local company.

If you're curious about French Star Trek comics, check out my 8of5 Archives report, which lists every comic that's ever been released in a French translation.

Preview images from Ships of the Line and other 2014 calendars

Amazon have updated their listings for several of the 2014 Star Trek calendars with samples pages, giving us a closer look at the art in Ships of the Line, and and idea of the format being used in the TOS and Into Darkness calendars.

Three images from Ships of the Line have been posted: "San Francisco", by Joe Hibert; "The Shape of Things to Come", by Doug Drexler and Michael Murray; and "NX Bound for Refit", by Doug Drexler and Ali Ries:

Three months each from the TOS and Into Darkness calendars have also been previwed:

In other Ships of the Line related news, Mark Rademaker posted a piece of concept art, on Facebook, for his new ringship which will be appearing in the 2014 calendar:

Meanwhile, Sean Tourangeau, the designer of the USS Titan, has been posting work in progress images of Tobias Richter's new USS Titan mesh. As Richter is a regular contributor to Ships of the Line, I'm hoping this is a good sign for the the Titan making it's long overdue appearance in years to come:

Lots more images of the new Titan mesh on Sean Tourangeau's Facebook page. While to get an idea of all the images in next year's Ships of the Line, see my previous article with the covers.

Ships of the Line 2014 front cover

Amazon have updated their listing for Ships of the Line 2014 with a shiny new cover. According to the back cover it is called "Nothing But Trouble", and was made by Douglas E Graves. It features the proto Klingon battle cruiser which was originally designed for Enterprise, but was never used on-screen and has subsequently been used in several TOS images in the Ships of the Line series. This cover is notable as the first in the fourteen year run to not include an Earth or Federation starship! Klingon ships have appeared on the covers before, but never on their own. It's certainly a design worthy of the cover, shame it never got used on Enterprise.

If you missed it before, here's the back cover:

Amazon updates have also moved some of the release dates, it appears Ships of the Line, and the 2014 daily calendar, will both be out in August, while the TOS, Into Darkness, and Engagement Calendar have all been pulled forward, now expected in July.

First look at Ships of the Line 2014, and other calendar updates

Amazon has updated its listing for several of the 2014 Star Trek calendars, with new back cover images. Those include next year's Ships of the Line, giving us a first look at the images within:

Got to love the fantastical madness of D.M. Phoenix's space squid attack on a starship! Pretty nice to see a Romulan War image in there too, and the return of the Enterprise-J, both by the mastermind of the whole thing, Doug Drexler! Tobias Richter's DS9 image looks spectacular too. I'm also pretty curious what's going on in Alan Rivard's fleet museum image; I'm guessing the shuttle it being towed into the Enterprise collection, but at this resolution it almost looks like it's attacking! Mark Rademaker's proto-warp-ringship appears to have a block of text with it, which I guess will be giving some context to this quasi-real-world concept design. All the artists contributing have done a great job, thank the prophets it wasn't cancelled! No new front cover yet, but the back here tells us the title and artist: Nothing But Trouble, by Douglas E Graves.

Amazon have also posted a new version of the Star Trek Into Darkness calendar backcover (the third iteration to date), it still doesn't look finished to me, so I guess it will change again:

And there's also the less visually exciting back cover for the daily calendar:
