The Wand Company's Bluetooth communicator is back, and tricorder on the way

The Wand Company, makers of high end Star Trek prop replicas with practical functions, are back in action, with both the return of a classic product, and a new working tricorder on the way. Continue below to check them out.

So far The Wand Company have produced a TOS phaser remote control(ad), a TOS communicator Bluetooth handset, and a type-1 phaser remote controlled mood light rock(ad). The phaser and communicator have been out of production for some time, and as a result are typically garnering very inflated prices on the secondary market. Well that price bubble just burst, as communicator is going back into production for a 55th anniversary release, and is available to order now on the Star Trek Shop (due to ship just next month).

The Wand Company tease "fully-functional" tricorder replica

The Wand Company, who have previously brought us the phaser remote control, and communicator bluetooth handset, are back, and ready to complete their TOS landing party kit with a "fully-functional" tricorder!

The Wand Company's approach to these products is not just to make a device that looks a bit like a Star Trek prop, with a practical function, but to really go to town to make a perfect replica of the screen used device, hiding inside it whatever function they have decided to give it.

The tricorder isn't due for release until summer next year, but they're excited to show it off, and so released this teaser video:

Phaser-glow rock mood light, and other stuff to Trek out the house

I've got a round-up of some of the latest Star Trek stuff out there to Trek out your home or office, and we'll start with one of the weirdest Star Trek products to have found its way to market...

Taking inspiration from The Enemy Within, The Wand Company (who have previously brought us things like the bluetooth communicator, and universal remote phaser) have come up with the phaser-controlled rock mood light. Simulating Sulu's desperate attempts to stay warm, this is a glowing rock, controlled, by a phaser...

The rock faithfully recreates the scene; with the phaser blast "heating" it up to full brightness, which then gradually dims once you stop firing (it is only light that you'll get though, no heat from this rock). There's also an alternate "atmosphere mode" where the rock can gradually shift through different colours and brightness. The rock is USB chargeable, and to complete your landing party experience comes complete with a Starfleet survival blanket!

Communicator wireless handset from The Wand Company

Following on from their immaculate TOS phaser reproduction which functioned as a universal remote, The Wand Company have now found a way to bring functionality to another classic Star Trek prop, the communicator. The new wireless handset communicator will allow us to make calls as if it were the real thing, connected to bluetooth enabled mobile devices.  It will also work as a speaker, to stream music and other audio.

Like the phaser, this new communicator has been made using 3D scans of one of the original props, so as well as being a functional device, it is also probably the best reproduction of that prop ever offered. It is made from "pressed metal, die cast metal, machined aluminum and textured ABS to replicate the original hero prop", and also features a range of Star Trek sound effects and audio clips.

It comes complete in a transit case, and comes with a magnetic stand, which also functions as a wireless recharging port.

The communicator is due out in January, and is available for pre-order in the US from ThinkGeek and StarTrek.com, and in the UK from Firebox. Continue after the jump for more images.

Set phasers to channel hop

The Wand Company, who have previously brought to the world Harry Potter magic wand, and Doctor Who sonic screwdriver, remote controls, have announced a new TOS phaser remote control. The gesture control universal remote works from both the detachable type-1 phaser, and the larger type-2 phaser pistol, adding extra functions once the type-1 is redocked, allowing you to control your infra-red remote controlled devices with a simple wave of your phaser.

As well as the fun of phasering your TV, this also sounds like it will also be a really good prop reproduction, with the remote being built using laser scans of one of the original props, and then constructed from die-cast metal, nickel and brass plated, plastic, rubber, painted and lacquered components. It also has light and sound effects, with the dial on the top of the phaser used to select the sound, and other moving and functional components, such as the raising targeting scope on top of the type-1. It all comes in a pretty snazzy case, and when not in the case, sits on a magnetic stand.

ThinkGeek expect to be shipping them in November, and it will also be available from Forbidden Planet in the UK. Continue after the jump for (lots) more photos, and more information about the prop reproduction.
