Discovery launch date, and first good look at the ship

Today CBS have finally announced the launch date for Star Trek: Discovery. In the US and Canada the first episode will air on the 24th of September, while Netflix viewers in the rest of the world have to wait until the 25th. More exacting details below, but first, check out the new poster released to announce the launch date, giving us our first good look at the USS Discovery:

Here's a closer look at the Discovery herself, which has evolved a little from the design we saw in the first teaser last year. I wonder if that dark ring in the saucer is a USS Vengeance style hole...

CBS have also released an animated version of this image via Twitter:

CBS have also got a new blurb for the series:
Star Trek: Discovery will follow the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.

Now to the details. In the US, as previously announced, the first episode will air on the CBS Television Network - The exact time won't be known until the night, as it follows a NFL Football game, but it is expected to be on between 8:30 and 9:30pm ET. That episode and the second episode will also be available on CBS All Access from that night.

Thereafter a new episode will be released each Sunday on CBS All Access. However the series is being split around Christmas, so the first eight episodes will run through to the 5th of November, and we'll then have to wait until some time in January for the remaining seven.

In Canada you can find Discovery all over the place! Following the same dates, the first two episodes air on Space Channel from 8:30pm ET, with subsequent episodes airing each following Sunday. The series will also be available on several different streaming and on-demand services, including Space GO, Space.ca, and CraveTV.

Everywhere else gets Discovery on Netflix, with new episodes available every Monday following the North American releases. And Netflix have their very own graphics to mark the date:

Entertainment Weekly have reported today comments from Discovery showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg, who noted a couple of the reasons Discovery has been delayed. They had to wait a little while for the series lead, Sonequa Martin-Green, to be freed up from her Walking Dead commitments, but mainly they put it down the sheer amount of effort they are putting into the production:
There’s is so much artistry and custom craftsmanship that go into every prop, every costume, every set. These things have to be designed and manufactured. We flew a costume designer to Switzerland to pick up the fabric for the Starfleet uniforms. Several items on our uniforms are 3D printed. Some of our sets can take over six weeks to make. CBS has given us the time and the money to make something the fans will find worthwhile.
They also noted they had to be build two full bridge sets, for the USS Shenzhou and the USS Discovery, revealing the Shenzhou is the older of the two ships.

Meanwhile a couple of weeks ago Discovery and Star Trek movie writer/producer Nicholas Meyer revealed he is working on another Star Trek project, in a TrekMovie interview:
One thing that has nothing to do with Discovery is that I am working on another Star Trek project, but I can’t discuss that either.
Despite TrekMovie pressing for more, no further details have yet been revealed of this mysterious other new Star Trek thing.

Star Trek: Discovery is due to start this September, and it will be distributed almost everywhere in the world on Netflix, except for the US where is will be available on CBS All Access, and Canada where it will be on Bell Media channels and services.
