Eaglemoss starships updates: XL Akira and Discovery prototypes

A little Eaglemoss Official Starships Collection update today, but with some really cool stuff, thanks to prototype models sent out to collectors recently.

But first, we have our first look at the twelfth XL model, and one I am especially looking forward to, the beautiful Akira class USS Thunderchild. This looks to be a nice substantial model, and has a lot more detail on the paints than the regular sized version. Interestingly it also actually has the name USS Thunderchild on the saucer (unlike the previous smaller model, which is screen-accurate for the unmarked ship on-screen). This is currently listed for February release on the US Eaglemoss webshop:

Now, prototypes! Which requires some backstory. A while ago Eaglemoss offered a limited number of it's very limited edition Crossfield class variant USS Glenn model on it's webshop. These were ordered up quickly, but alas a few of them were damaged by Eaglemoss moving stock around and so the orders were not fulfilled (you can read a longer account of this here). Thus there were several unhappy collectors, who among the members of the Hero Collector Star Trek Fan Group have been dubbed the Glenn 8.

But they got a very happy ending, as Eaglemoss have been sending them prototype models as an apology. And the most exciting part of this is, several of them are the first time we've seen the designs in the flesh (or plastic or resin or whatever they're made from).

First up, a Matthew Thomas was sent this rather spectacular prototype for the Discovery work bee. Wildly out of scale with the rest of the series this model seems huge, and is packed with details, including translucent windows which suggest it will have interior detailing as well! Looks like it could be a real highlight in the series. You can see lots more pictures, including some giving a better idea of how big it is, on the original Facebook group post.

Next we have the Klingon Cleave Ship, another very unique addition to the series. You can see more photos of this model from the owner Nick Bryan, in this thread. Looks pleasingly detail packed too!

And then we have the USS Eddison, a Hoover class ship, which is one of my favourite Discovery Starfleet designs owing to it's unusual configuration. This was sent to Daniel James, and again more pictures can be found on Facebook.

That's all the first looks; other members of the "Glenn 8" were sent prototypes of the Klingon Qoj class, Kelvin timeline Klingon battlecruiser, and the space shuttle OV-165 and Dala's Delta Flyer. What a treat for those lucky unlucky collectors! And thanks to all of them for sharing with the wider world.
