first Discovery comic: The series, written by Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson, with art by Tony Shasteen, is set to be the first of several miniseries based on the series; with this one filling in the backstory of T'Kuvma. Until now though it has simply been referred to as Star Trek: Discovery; annoyingly indistinct from the series as a whole. Well good news folks, the Amazon listing for the series omnibus book (due in May), now lists it with a title! The Light of Kahless.
IDW have also recently released a promo video for their Star Trek comics, which includes the first look at a comic-book rendition of the USS Shenzhou:
Meanwhile in the novel corner of the Discovery-verse: Eagle-eyed TrekBBS contributor tenmei spotted Amazon UK have added a listing for the second Discovery novel, by Dayton Ward - Glamorously listed as "Star Trek Discovery 2 TV Tie in". This gives us a release date, 8th of February 2018. The listing has yet to turn up on other retailers weirdly, but it is in the Simon and Schuster retailer catalogue, noting a similar date (two days earlier).
In other scheduling news, Defcon's Treklit noticed Kirsten Beyer's next Voyager novel, Architects of Infinity, has shifted on the release schedule once more, moving back a month to become the April book next year - Presumably this is due to Beyer being busy on Discovery (where she works both as a writer on the TV show, and coordinator for the tie-ins).
Star Trek Beyond - The Makeup Artistry of Joel Harlow, written by Joe Nazzaro for Titan Books. In an interview with TrekCore, Joel Harlou explained how the book (focusing on his team's work on more than fifty unique alien designs for Star Trek Beyond) came to be, and what the book contains:
Well, I was working with Joe Nazzaro, who was writing an interview with me for Prosthetics Magazine. After the interview was over, and we were talking about photos to release and whatever was documented, I was like, “Look, I documented this film more than any film I’ve ever documented.”Finally, on the way in November is a new journal from Insight Editions, sporting the USS Enterprise-D on the cover, which has now been revealed:
I’ve got over 5,000 photos and videos… I was flying my drone around the shop! This was documented start to finish and each one of the characters that we were making I documented start to finish – from design, concept, sculpture, life cast and molding, casting pieces, pre-painting, application tests, retests… there’s just a wealth of information on each one of these 50-plus characters.
