Picard trailer is here to blow your mind

CBS revealed a bunch of very exciting surprises about Picard at the San Diego Comic Con today, with the release of a new trailer that brings us more familiar faces that we might have hoped for, and sets the scenes for a whole new Trek. Check it out (on Instagram is geolocked YouTube fails you):

Yep. that's right, not only is Picard back, but he's joined by Brent Spiner and Jeri Ryan, returning as Data and Seven of Nine! The Borg clearly play a big part in the arc for Picard, as also returning is actor Jonathan Del Arco, aka Hugh the Borg! And there's more, showrunner Michael Chabon also revealed that Jonathans Frakes and Marina Sirtis will be back too, one assumes as Riker and Troi (oh please visit aboard the USS Titan!).

In less happy news, we've got a little longer to wait for this now, as the series is going to begin in early 2020 rather than the latter part of this year. Should be worth the wait though!

Alongside the returning characters there's a whole new cast, which we now have images and names of. First up there's Isa Briones as Dahj, the mysterious woman that seems to kick start this new adventure for Picard:

Pictured here are a Romulan, Elnor, played by Evan Evagora, and Doctor Agnes Jurati, played by Alison Pill. I think the latter might also be the scientist looking at the parts of a Soong-type android in the trailer.

On the bridge of Picard's new ship we have Elnor again, along with Cristobal “Chris” Rios, played by Santiago Cabrera, and Raffi Musiker, played by Michelle Hurd:

Missing from the images so far released are Narek, another Romulan, played by Harry Treadaway, and of course Brent Spiner as Data! They have released a Seven of Nine photo though:

And naturally more Picard!

Entertainment Weekly released this last photo, revealing Picard's dog is, of course, named Number One:

UPDATE: Here are some screencaps from the trailer. Let's see what we've got:

So first up, the Borg are back! This Cube looks like it's had chunks taken out of it though, and there are ships flying all around.

While somewhere someone's doing Borg desections!

Might that somewhere be inside the Cube itself I wonder? Are these new Borg alcoves in the back of shot? And note the sign "This facility has gone 5843 days without an assimilation" (16 years).

Those Romulans are guarding a varied group, including Dahj.

Who, gets away?

Meanwhile at a red planet - surely Vulcan? - A fleet of birdish ships approach; Romulans coming, for good or ill?

Speaking of Romulans, here's out missing main character, Narek. All that ominous lighting doesn't scream good-guy does it?

Plenty more Romulans about here too!

Is this guy a Romulan too?

The return of Data is a very pleasant surprise!

But of course he was blown up... So, B-4? Lore?

Picard on his travels:

(off to fight a Gorn?)

And some of his friends (maybe):

UPDATE: Films That Rock have uploaded the entire San Diego Comic Con panel on YouTube. Check it out:

Picard is due later this year on CBS All Access in the US, Bell Media services in Canada, and Amazon Prime Video in most of the rest of the world.

To be fair...I think the shot of Data might be on a holodeck. For one thing, Data APPEARS to be wearing a late 2370's uniform. For another, Data refers to Picard as Captain, a rank that no longer applies.

Data sure looks like he's wearing the same new uniform as everyone else.
